Apparently, you can use it as motorcycle chain lube also. My camper, although it was new when we bought it, must have been a leftover and transported in the winter. Damn thing has a lot of rust underneath so I'm trying HDMP to see how it fares. It'll never see salt while I own it, so as long as I get ahead of it now, it shouldn't get any worse. I did the truck's receiver also where the hitch wore through the paint.
Thanks  I was looking at it and couldn't see any other way it could be put together. I'll coax it apart one of these coming weekends.

Many trailers have awful quality of paint on their frames. Mine is flaking off in many areas. I will be using a wire brush and and POR15 and a rattle can once I get through a couple other projects. Currently on hold with fedex for over 30 mins. My harbor freight order was sent to flipping florida.

They're all bad, even the powder-coated stuff doesn't hold up. Galvanized seems to be the only way to go, if there's ever any possibility of salt or water.

Think mine was about 2-3 days and they gave me a rental free. Stuff took a little time to cure..mine was last spring

YES!!! Absolutely needed to be eligible for the 2nd inspect and/or reframe down the road or they will deny you if your frame rots. Just do it.

See above, they won't honor the rest of the terms if you don't do this step. Doesn't mean you have to do it tomorrow per se just in a reasonable time. I waited a couple of months to do mine because it was still winter and shitty out, wanted to give the stuff some good weather for curing.

I just rolled over 50k and not a spec of rust on my frame, so that's a good sign. Only significant rust is on my front drive shaft.

On my old 150, the spindles rusted pretty quickly, nothing else, just the spindles. No idea why but it seemed to be a ‘thing’.

    You keeping it coated??

When I was looking for 1st gens, I saw a wax covered one that "didn't need replacement". I very much disagreed. It basically ends up looking like a shitty cover up of a rusty frame, only Toyota did it instead of Johhny down the block in his driveway.

I really wasn't impressed and immediately moved on. You should get it coated, but I wouldn't expect to be impressed by it, or it to really do anything. But at least you can say "hey I followed procedure, now give me a new frame"

Nope, doing nothing. I do go through the car wash and spray the frame off sometimes in the winter but that's about it.

I won't have the truck long enough to go through the trouble of coating it. Probably no more than another year.

Ah, gotcha. So far, the Ford coatings on their frames seem to hold up pretty well. I ran the F150 up to about 5 years old and 120k miles and the frame was still in really good shape. I did absolutely nothing to help with the rust either. I'm not planning any rust prevention on the 250 either unless it starts looking like the coating isn't doing it's job. I know Fluid Film is relatively cheap and easy to apply, but I work on my own vehicles and I know the mess it can make of the underside (not a huge deal overall to keep the frame in good shape, but if I don't need it, I'd rather not do it).

Yeah I mean, so far Toyota has rust issues, GM has recently had rust issues....otherwise, nobody has rust problems, just normal rust (actually first gen Mazda 3 had some issues).

I was planning on 20+ years with this truck but after how I've been treating it in the woods, and the fact I might want a 4 banger for a longer term vehicle, etc etc. we'll see. I also may very well end up trading it for a jeep + corolla or something similar so I have something I can bounce off trees in the woods with and still get to work on Monday :D

Slow day at work, so I'm educating myself. Crazy respect for these old-school fabricators and craftsmen, here's a nice little tutorial on butt welding body panels. This'll come in handy when I start patching up my trailer tub.

I have a very love-hate relationship with YouTube 'how-to' videos. They're awesome, lots of great information by experts. The problem is, they make everything look so damn easy so I'm like, 'hey, I can do that, no sweat'. Then I try to replicate it and it looks absolutely nothing like the video

I try to go into it with an understanding of "this guy has probably been doing this for N years and has already made all the mistakes that I'm about to", where N is at least half as long as I've been alive. I know that if I try to copy his work, it's not going to pass muster, but I can often get a functional product and be happy with it, even proud of having been able to do that much myself. It's like any craft, you've got to be doing it pretty consistently to be any good at it.

About 5 or so years ago now I had to do a window actuator in my old jeep. I was able to find someone doing the exact door (passenger rear) on the exact jeep as mine. Everything I've wanted to see someone do first, I've been able to fine specifics of it on that specific vehicle, demonstrated, visual. Some people don't present as well as others. But damn, that kind of resource is fantastic.

PS - Anyone ditched the stock spare wheel and buy a normal stock rim/wheel and integrate that into tire rotations?
