What's going on everyone? Quick question regarding possible lift options. I'm looking to get around 2" of lift for a little more ground clearance when driving on the beach with larger tires. I'm looking at these two lifts, but am a bit of a noob when it comes to going up (last ride was a slammed VW GTI) so I'm looking for some opinions. I know the coils is one of the major differences here, but that's where my knowledge pretty much ends lol.

The truck is my daily driver so ride quality is definitely a concern. Thanks a lot guys!

Both kits are Bilstein parts. The first kit includes beefier coils for the front and a spacer for additional lift. 5100 shocks all around and an add-a-leaf in the rear. Depending on what sort of weight you plan to add to the front (bumper, winch, etc.) the coils may be unecessary and could make the ride much more firm than stock. It’s subjective but I personally wouldn’t be keen on it if I wasn’t adding weight.

The second kit also has upgraded bilstein 5100s in the front, would retain stock coils. Although it has bilstein 5160s in the rear which is a relatively more significant upgrade in my opinion. Depending on which one you choose you’ll get blocks vs add-a-leaf in the rear. If you’re willing to spend more, I’d recommend avoiding spacers and blocks.

What goals do you have for your truck? What do you want out of new suspension parts?

To add to the previous post in case you didn’t know:
Mid travel/extended travel (not to be confused with long travel) gives you a bit more shock travel, but to gain the movement, you need to upgrade your UCA or else you will stay at stock movement.

i don’t believe it is a true “mid travel” kit. Makes no mention of of the extra 1” down travel or need for UCAs.

OP, check out @HeadStrong Off-Road and get some genuinely good help

Headstrong is a great company. I did the 5100s with ome 887, headstrong aal, and a quarter inch spacer for driver side lean. 840 shipped to my door. Very happy with the lift . IMG_20200223_142341_012.jpg

I appreciate the response. I run a rtt for extended weekend camping trips so I need it to handle the weight of that + gear. I was looking at the stage 3 which comes with the AAL, I much prefer that over any sort of block.

I was under the impression that it was just a marketing term. I didn't see it mention any extended downward travel or the need for new UCA's. Thanks man.

Now, I don’t know if that particular kit is true Mid-Travel. I would contact headstrong like the other posts have said. They sell Bilstein.
Most popular set up as an upgrade to 5100s is the 5160 rear like in that kit, but with a 6112 front. That’s because of it being a bigger shock body (reduces shock fade when overworked). You said you were driving on beaches, if it’s like Baja type where you are going at a decent speed, I recommend the beefier 6112.

I'm certainly not baja cruising the beach haha. Yea I know the 6112 is a superior shock but was just curious if it was necessary in my situation. Ride quality might warrant the upgrade though. Thanks for the input!

I highly suggest talking to Headstrong. If it’s budget, you can find used ones on here cause a lot of people likes to swap out suspensions.

I am actually going to sell my “6112/5160” w/ only 15k on it. I put quotation cause it’s not a true 6112/5160. The one I have was from the 2nd gen (fits 3rd gen) pros that Bilstein built strictly for Toyota. It’s pretty much the same as the 6112/5160 but can’t adjust height and set at 1.75” lift. Don’t know when I’ll post it though since I am still waiting on my new suspension to arrive (you can read up on a lot of thread on here about it cause it was a popular swap, but Toyota doesn’t sell them anymore PTR13-35150).
Rode a taco with 5100, and it felt like the stock ones just sits a little taller in my opinion. Like I said, talk to headstrong, they sell Bilstein, foxes, King, Elka, and ads. Tell em what you use your truck for and they’ll steer you on the right direction.

If you have a RTT with gear in the rear, I would highly recommend a leaf pack replacement instead of an add-a-leaf. This will significantly increase your old carrying capabilities and will likely lift the rear just as much as you’re interested in. The stock leafs are not great quality, and an add-a-leaf to the stock pack is more of a bandaid. I have the OME Dakar leaf pack replacement which I got from @HeadStrong Off-Road and love it. I’m soon to be adding a camper shell and plan to install an add-a-leaf to the new leaf pack as well.

6112 is def superior but I hear a lot of people complain about a harsh ride when lifting towards the 2” mark. The 5100s can use longer coils to achieve lift so they don’t ride as harsh, but that choice is up to you

I'm going with dakars for the rear. Do I go with the extra leaf add on?

How much weight do you have in the rear? RTT and gear? Is it always mounted there or do you take it off?

It's not on year round. I do always keep the bed rack on though but that's minimal weight. During the season I have between 2-500lbs in the back. Think the regular medium dakars are good for this weight range?

With a RTT on there, you'll do fine running the add-a-leaf on the dakar leaf pack, however when you take the tent off the rake will become more severe. Up to you if that's okay or not (i personally don't hate rake as long as it's not ridiculous). You could also look into Airbags which are commonly used by those that have varying loads in the rear. I am not as well versed on these so you'd have to search for other posts in here to learn more (i've seen a few).

    Example: https://www.headstrongoffroad.com/store/p225/FireStone_Ride-Rite_Air_Bags_for_2005-2018_Tacoma.html

This looks like another good option. It appears to include everything you'd need. I'm certainly leaning toward the 6112/5160 combo and I'd rather spend the extra to get a bit better on road ride quality. This price point looks solid. This may be my move but I haven't heard enough about the all pro leafs.
