and 14.4 was my average for the 2,400 mile round trip to Vegas I just got back from. It was my buddy and I and around 200 lbs of gear. It was her first road trip and damn I thought my MPG would have been better 20200303_164708.jpg 20200305_165037.jpg 20200307_123441.jpg

My 2002 Dodge 2500 Cummins 6 speed usually got better mileage around town than my 2019 Tacoma. For Highway Driving and Towing it always has gotten better mileage than the Tacoma. My grandson has the Dodge Ram now and he was surprised my Tacoma has worse mileage. At least the Ram stayed in the family.

I sure wish we could get a Cummins Turbo 4BT in out Tacoma Trucks.

Bought a 2020 OR RWD a few weeks back. First tank average was 16.9 (calculated). I've kinda learned how to drive it to get better MPG...I've noticed if i get to the speed I need quickly then get out of it, it's done faster shifting to a higher gear and I cruise at a much lower RPM. If I try to old lady it, it seems to want to cruise in lower gears at higher RPMs the whole way in the city. I'm sure others are reading this thinking, duh. Lol

Edit: after reading all the comments, most folks are saying the opposite...I might be an idiot lol

OP don't worry about mileage for awhile. Mine was 18mpg for the first 4000 miles then picked up 3-5mpg around 6000 miles as it broke in. 2.7/5MT on stock 245/75-16s.

I get 21-24mpg (miles/tank fill) calculated depending on how lame I am on the right pedal. Rural hilly curvy roads mostly 35-65mph. Not too much traffic.

Use the fuelly method of tracking gas. Mileage and tank fill ups. I get between 17.5 and 20 depending city or highway.

new engines get worse mpg so around 10k your numbers will improve. Also these trucks take a not insignicant hit in the colder weather so if you’re in a northern or colder area right now it’ll get better in the coming months too.

    I have a 2020 with about 2.7k on it.

That’s consistent with what you would expect. Diesel has more energy per weight, and a 2500 is almost always better for towing IMO. Switching to diesel just to “improve MPGs” is somewhat arbitrary — diesel costs more and the engines that run it tend to have more frequent oil changes. Plus, more particulates go into the air, which is bad for everyone’s lungs, though that might be a localized issue partially offset by a lower-energy refining process (I’ll have to ask my refinery bros on the last one.)

Longest its way better than my 4.7 tundra i'm happy. That 4.7 performed better than a friends 5.3 chevy, but it never passed a gas station it didn't like.

I will never financially recover from this
When I first got the truck I recall averaging 23mpg on my 400 mile road trips.

When I quit doing road trips and just was driving back and forth to work I started getting like 18-19mpg.

Now I own a Chevy Prizm as a beater car and I don’t remember the last time I looked at my MPG stuff.

If gas mileage is a concern grab one of these babies for $1000. Spent $17 to fill up last weekend and that will last me 400 miles.

I'm re-learning something that I learned the hard way with my '16 Taco... these trucks hate wind more than anything. The Tacoma is the only vehicle I've ever known that gets better gas mileage around town than on the highway. As long as your trip is on 40ish mph roads without many lights, 18-22 mpg is really easy. On the highway with cruise at 71 and Texas winds, it's more like 15. Hoping OVTune and more miles on the engine help me find a highway cruising sweet spot.

So does all this mean that Tundras get almost the same mpg's as Tacomas on the highway in real world driving conditions? Do any of you have experience with both? If the highway mpg's are similar, I might be going Tundra when the time comes for a new truck...

I have had 3 third gen Tacomas and a Tundra. My 2016 TRD Sport 2wd averaged 20.5 mpg, my 2017 TRD Off Road 4x4 averaged 17.9. The Tundra I only had for 6 months and I averaged 14 mpg. Highest mpg on the Tundra was 15.6, all highway on one tank. Mostly city and I was low to mid 13s. It did have a 38 gallon tank though.

I track all my fuel ups on Fuelly. My 2020 TRD Sport 4x4 has only had one fill up, but I averaged 20.1 on that one.
