It’s a p-trap, and is required by code to keep sewer gas out of the house. The pic is a wye connector which is often required as opposed to a 90° connection. I won’t comment much more as I’m not a plumber, but it would be worth your time to look up your county or city code. There are all kinds of little things you might not think about that could be required. They aren’t that hard to navigate, I dug onto ours for my water softener drain and was able to get it all figured out. Good luck with your project!

The fiancé doesn’t want the washer hose just draped over into the sink, or I would do that.

Also keep in mind what your area may require for drain pipe size when it’s being utilized by both washer and sink.

Dang really? So how will the sink be vented if I put it where the washer drains now?

So the washer will just always “blast” into the sink when it drains?

I just thought the washer pushed the water out with much more pressure and it wouldn’t just “drain” out, like it would be loud draining into the sink.

Killing me lol. Now I have to discover some Pinterest-y way to hide the damn hose on the sink.

Paint it white so it blends into the sink.

    You’re welcome.

T-pipe, with Side of tee going out then 90 degrees up for washer drain pipe. (You’ll want the washer drain pipe higher than the sink so if the sink backfills the washer pipe doesn’t leak onto your floor) then you will def need a trap for the sink,

Would it be that much of an issue if you're never using both at the same time?

What I was thinking. KISS. The photo I posted earlier had a P trap for a sink and kept the washer drain just above it. With a galvanized pipe for a drain it's probably an older house.

Also I earlier said that the pipe was very close to the wall but it is not impossible. It just depends on how much work you want to do.

You could cut the drywall and save the piece. Screw on your Y pipe then patch the drywall with that piece. A PITA but can be done. It depends on how handy you are.

I am not a plumber, just a DIYer. I spent the last few days installing a whole house water conditioning system. We have extremely hard water and salt based water softeners are banned in our area.

It is multi staged with a UV light and multiple shutoff points, pressure gauges and a bypass to change out the active carbon in the main tank without shutting off the water.

It is working now, it just needs a couple of things to finish it up. A frame to hold the main tanks (earthquake safety) and a cover where I opened up the wall.

For such a small section could you just cut the end of the pipe and use a glued fitting? Would solve the threading issue.

    You could... but.

It would have to be water tight. It would be permanent.

I would rather keep the option to change things later if something was upgraded or you needed to make a change.

If you are fine with it being permanent go for it.

It’s even harder than that. That’s not a standard wall haha. That’s a sheet of drywall glued to a block wall..

Another trick is to take a golf tee tap it into the hole and cut it off with a utility knife or wood chisel
