Well that was an easy dash cam install.

This was my main concern with a suction cup mount. I went with the 3m pad that came with my dash cam so we will see how long that holds. There are lots of mirror mount kits on Amazon depending on which dash cam you have. They can be awkward to initially set up because of the limited space you have to work with up there but once they are installed it should last damn near forever.

yea why not. the new style adapter provides a bit more current than the old one. shouldnt be an issue. i think 1amp is standard for most wall plug to usb. the fast chargers that have been coming out provice like 2.1amp. it may not charge the gopro super fast, but will keep it on when the truck is on

Curious about the same thing. I've already got the mount on my '17 and the go pro. Just need a power source and have it turn on and off with the truck somehow

Have you done this with a gopro? Do you know if iti’ll power on the gopro and start recording when the truck turns on? Any experience with settings to configure the gopro this way?

I've tried several kinds / brands of double sided tape and they all suck. Even a couple that were recommended here. On the other hand, double sided tape that comes with most dashcams seem to work the best by far. In my experience, the spongy type tape is the worst. Pure garbage. Doesn't even hold for a day.

I hear ya, I’m looking at Amazon right now, I’m gonna try and look for a screw mount one with some kind of adapter.

    Yeah.

So, I have a Hero 7 Black and have been checking settings. It's not really setup well for dashcam purposes.

    - It does not appear to be able to power on automatically when power is applied, but you can enable voice commands and tell it to start recording when you start driving. But, it's always listening then and the battery may drain down.
    - It does not charge while recording, just runs off the external power. It starts charging again when not recording. So, if you always use it while driving, it will never really charge.
    - You can set it to turn off after 5 minutes of idle time. But you have to remember to tell it to stop recording when you stop driving or it won't be idle, just sitting there recording away until the battery dies.
    - It does support looping, but only saves the footage if you tell it to. If you get in a wreck, you better be able to hit the button if you want the footage.

That's about the worst setup for using as a dash cam that I can think of. And Hypersmooth sucks balls for mountain biking (it jumps all over as it tried to find an anchor point in the video) and gets the camera really hot.

Don't get me wrong, I do like it and it does take some good video, it's just not as cool as I thought it would be. You'd think they could just add a simple "dashcam mode" that works like a real dashcam. You are better off getting a real dashcam.

I recently bought the same camera and was wondering if it was charging while on. Good to know it doesn't.

I had it plugged in, but noticed after driving around a bit the battery was lower than when I started.

Again, thanks for the heads up!

Are you guys still getting the error message on the Garmins with the new adapter? I have version 1 of their dongle and I always get that popup every time with my dash cam saying it can't be charged with the cable connected, but the battery has never gone down. I was thinking of purchasing the new dongle if it gets rid of that error, or is it more of the fact that Garmin doesn't like it when we don't use the OEM cable with the dash cam even though it's perfectly fine?

Does this adapter work for dash cams that are on even when the vehicle is off? My dash cam records movement and if your car gets hit while parked, so it’s constantly on.

No. The power it gets from the rearview mirror is only "on" when the ignition is on.

Which Garmin? I have a Garmin 56 and the rev-1 dongar device and I've never seen an error message. Have you tried updating the Garmin firmware?
