Is this peeling hood worth DIY fixing?

Hi all,

My clear coat is pretty faded, and I was considering sanding it off with 1000-2000 and reapplying a clearcoat.

From reading here, I understand that this is a temporary fix, it will not match perfectly, and the paint is already faded. That’s alright, I mainly want to get rid of the white outline all over my hood.

With the right prepwork, is this feasible over such a large area? Or should I save my time and wait for a complete hood repaint?

 

I guess it depends on your wants. But for me....I would leave as is. Adds character to a 26 year old truck.

 

Yeah, I've thought that too. Part of me thinks touching up the paint/body here and there would be nice. The other part of me thinks it's either complete repaint or bust.

Edit; I guess another thing is, will adding clearcoat help to protect the exposed paint from rust/the elements?

 

For touching up the paint/body take a look at the duplicolor products. They have primer, paint and clear coat, that provide a decent DIY finish.

 

Read this thread: may give some good tricks to help make it look better. I realize its probably a whole different animal, but the 'ol CLR scrub and Fluid Film might make the white go away. Would probably stop further patina though.

I actually have an order in from automotive touchup paint, but it's taking forever and hasnt shipped, so i'm considering cancelling it.

 

I skimmed through that, and are you suggesting I simply use CLR (ive got some evaporust already), then fluid film (instead of another clearcoat?

 

I think the rust converter is for if you have rust exposed. Most of those rigs are old single stage hard as nails Toyota paint. I was thinking maybe the CLR would scrub off some of the 'dead skin' there and then the fluid film is oily so it will just deepen and saturate the remaining. If the paint is generally pretty shot, I figure nothing wrong with just dousing the whole thing in FF lol. Least it wont rust maybe. Wont smell great for a while either.

 

Just for fun, I tried to rub some evaporust into the peeling clearcoat area, and it didnt do anything. I'll probably pickup some CLR this week and try that next.

 

I cancelled the paint order, but i'd at least like to protect the remaining paint on the hood and maybe get some of that white residue off. Here's my plan, please critique!

1. Wash hood
2. Use CLR and 1000 or 2000 grit sandpaper on the white residue.
3. Use 2000 grit on hood (area with exposed paint) to rough up the surface
4. Find some clearcoat in a can at autozone or walmart; Put two coats on the area of the hood that I roughed up.

I'm not too concerned about looking perfect, but i'm not trying to shotgun it either

 

Use Spraymax 2k clear. It has a 24 hour pot life. Read and follow the tech sheet and you’ll get a decent finish.

 

You're going to find it extremely difficult to just sand off the clear coat. What this will lead to is you breaking through the basecoat and into the primer. Translation: An ugly situation is just going to get uglier.

As for using Fluid Film on a hood, absolutely not! If you do, the first rain storm will turn your whole truck - and especially your windshield - into an oily mess. And as much as I love FF in the proper application (which this is not), it smells awful.

 

Wrap it.. easy cheap and you can peel it off... I dunno what it is but in I <-- key word here have never been a fan of the old peeling pain rust look even on older cars...

 

There's an old adage, "You can't polish a turd, but you can roll it in glitter!"
I like the idea of a wrap, or maybe even dip it in a color of your choice.

 

Thanks for all the replies guys. So here’s what I did so far: I tried to sand off the clear coat before I read the advice, and it didn’t work at all!

The paints already destroyed, so I used a metal paint scraper to get the clearcoat off. I only removed the fading/white CC and left the good stuff.

After that, I used some duplicolor CC (didn’t see the spraymax post). I used 3 light coats and 1 heavy. It’s still drying.

Hopefully that white residue crap won’t come back for at least the next year! Will post pics today, of course

i had a 95 single cab before getting into the all-new Tacoma, bright blue metallic

is there something in the air where you are located to cause this issue

 

It gets really hot here, maybe intense exposure to heat and sun? I dont garage it and the previous three owners didn't either.
