How to turn an offroad bumper into a railgun.
Step 1: weld D ring to bumper......

There was a guy in the second gen thread who was building a bumper and was planning on just welding some of these onto the face for recovery points. We went on and on about how that’s a terrible idea and he finally deleted all his posts.

But...I know, from selling them, that those are actually made to hold a great deal of weight. Why would you guys tell him that?

Because there’s an immense amount of force at play during a dynamic recovery off-road. A couple inches of weld is not sufficient to be safe.

Because the weld would snap rocketing that D ring into the poor unlucky bastard who was trying to pull him out.

These are used all the time as tie downs and anchor points and are engineered to have WLL that are equal to or greater than the force a winch would impart.

Also, wouldn't the winch cable or snatch strap fail first?

Before a weld the size of your thumb? Doubt it.

There’s a big difference between something used as a tie down point and a recovery point. Just like how you can tow a whole bunch of weight off a hitch ball but a recovery off a hitch ball can snap them in half. I mean look at all off-road bumpers ever, none have a weld on ring like that for a reason. Instead they’re some mega thick chunks that get welded on the face, the back, the mounting plate, etc.

Another thing I forgot to mention is angle of the pull. Imagine a perpendicular hard pull, say to scoot a trucks ass over that’d slipped off the trail. The weld on d ring would peel right off.

You know i welded my recovery points to the face of my front bumper and have been scared to use them. It was a really bad call on my part.

The giant 1” thicc pass-through ones I got were only $32 shipped. Should grab some for a fun project, and so no one gets taken out recovering you since you do tend to get stuck frequently.
