All Things Bikes and Tacos! (...and every vehicle imaginable)

They used to allow MyO for lower tiers of their bikes, including down to a $5K spec'd Rallon. You could customize paint colors, as well as components. I designed one for myself and even put in the order through the Orbea LBS (Contender bikes for the Utah folks). I was so so stoked for it. A few days after I put in the order, I found out it was going to be months before they started building mine. Decided to scrub the custom build and just take one that they had in the shop...

Long story short, I think Orbea cut the custom program for lower tiers because they were so backed up with orders.

Edit: I just designed a $5700 Orbea Occam, so it seems it's still possible to get a "reasonably" priced custom Orbea. The site is quoting a delivery date of 6/25, so it's still a bit of a wait but much better than I was quoted.

 

McClaren probably did the aero testing on it considering its a road bike. Those roadies take it way too seriously.

Former CEO of Boeing was a huge roadie, and I can say with confidence he brought his bike in the test wind tunnel more than once.

 

I try to refrain from buying things that need to be shipped on Facebook. Especially a bike, and what they can potentially cost to somebody. I've see person after person get scammed out of their hard earned money --- With that being said, yes some might not have been the smartest people or had the most common sense, but still. Assholes will be assholes. Might just be me personally, but I definitely wouldn't buy any USED bike unless i am able to test ride it, or at minimum see/touch/feel it.

 

Quick input would be appreciated. Been looking to add a bike and I have found a word of mouth deal on a barely used 2020 fuel ex 8. Cost is $2900. What do you guys think about the price.

 

Ah yeah front is no good, I didn’t mind the back brake being a little weak so I went a while before fixing it but front I wouldn’t try to get by with haha

What length stem are you guys running? I’m currently on a 50mm stem right now. Climbing is fine. I’m not the fastest. Usually one of the slowest up actually. But doesn’t bother me. I like to take my time.

I’m looking at switching up to a 35mm stem. I feel that the sharp turns and switch backs are the parts I have most trouble on. I care more about the descents than the climb.

many thoughts? Would 50 to 35mm make that big of a difference?

 

I found with a 35, the front comes up too easily while climbing. I settled on 40 as a happy medium. Better climbing, still quick handling for descents

 

Even the smallest changes with your reach affect the bike in a huge way.

Going to a 35mm stem will make climbing a little bit harder since you will have less weight over the front of the bike. That being said, it will help with descending.

Is your stem 0 degree, positive, or negative?

Hmmm maybe I’ll look into a 40. But I have someone that’s willing to trade me my 50mm for his 35mm and it’s the exact same stem.

 

By my rough estimate that's 18% off of retail. I think thats too much to pay for that used bike, but not by a lot. I'm sure the person has some wiggle room. You are not getting any of the fringe benefits offered by the bike shop (free tunes, etc.) or warranty support so you need to account for that as you make your decision. Remember that bikes go on sale somewhat often so you may get that bike near that the cost of that used one if you are patient. I am not sure how often Trek's go on sale either so I'm no help there.

Fit is super personal, so no size is going to be "best" without taking into consideration the full setup. Before you go out and get a new stem, research a bit about what that change will do to your handling. Then ask a LBS to test out a couple lengths (most have plenty on hand) before you buy.

 

Yea I been reading up on it. On my old bike I switched from a 70 to a 50 and it made it a lot better. This current bike is longer and slacker with a 50. So I was thinking maybe a 35mm might be better. Running wider bars than my old bike too. I’m not sure if the lbs around here are open to full capacity to let me demo like that right now.

 

Could see if they're willing to trade for a ride with the caveat that either person can cancel the deal if they don't like the new stem.
