Balancing problems

I am having the worst luck!! I had some yokohama geolanders wrapped around my 16" steelies and they made a bad vibration problem for me. Discount Tire traded out those tires with some Michelins ATXs M/Ss. Believe it or not, I'm still getting the vibration!! I took my truck to the Toyota dealership. They mounted a wheel package from a brand new truck in the lot. It rode a lot better but still vibrated at 75mph. THey are as baffled as I am......they feel that it is a tire problem. I think that the wheels have to be out of round.....it can't be the Michelins!! I went back to Discount tire and discussed the problem. They wouldn't even talk to about it because they told me that they've tried everyway to help me out and that Michelins are perfect.

Has anyone else run into this problem witht their 16" steelies? Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

 

Are you talking about the factory rims? or are these aftermarket?

 

these are 16" steel rims that come on the prerunner stock....thanks for replying.

 

I am having a similar issue in the past 5,000 miles. I have developed a vibration at 66-68 MPH. It shudders on the steering wheel, and you can see it on the passenger seat when no one is sitting in it. I don't have time to take it by the dealership right now, but Discount Tire rotated and balanced my tires last week - still having the same issue.

 

Since the wheels are made by Toyota specifially for your truck, i find it hard to believe that there is a problem with the wheel. It's possible that the person that balanced them didnt know what they were doing or that the rims are not true, but i would think the problem is with the tires. It's strange that two compeletely different sets would have the same problem. Over inflation in the rear can cause some vibration, they should have a little less air in them than the front. I'm assuming you have checked that? i reallly dont know. did you have this problem with the original tires?

 

Yes I did. With the fact that I have Michelins for tires, you still think that it is the tires? Everyone seems to think that all Michelins are flwless (especially discount!!) I drove all the way into work. The funny thing is that I felt the vibration not all the time. But when it shook, it shook bad.

I noticed that after the toyota dealership worked on it, the truck seemed to drift to the right and also when I apply my brake!! I am leaving the truck with the Toyota dealershkip witht a list of to do's:

1. Place my wheel package on a new Tocoma off the sales lot and drive it to see if the new truck vibrates with them on. If it rolls fine, That rules out my wheel package and places all attention to my suspension and everything else down there!!

2. Get an alignment.

3. Check out roters, wheels bearings, and drive shaft.

4. Get an oil change.

My thoughts - I would be interested to see what they say after the list is complete. I think one of the first two/three should answer your questions.

when i got my new mud tires i had a prob like that but the guy at the shop said he had to spin the tire 180 from what the computer told him to do

I just got back from Toyota Dealership and they fixed my truck by replacing the drive shaft. They said that it may have been binding and out of balance. I also had them do an alignment.

I hope that this was some kind of help. I spent 8 months going through different types of custom wheels and tires for the vibration to go away. i finally have my baby back and she rides smoother than EVER!!

Now I'm looking for something to dress up the front-end like fog/driving lights with bar or some nerf bar.....what would you recommend?

 

I am going to have the dealership take a look at my wheels when I have some money (balancing isn't free ). I am going to put them through the paces until the vibration is gone. Too bad they won't just fix what I know is wrong with it.

As for the front end - that depends on what you like. Bull bars are popular, but I have always been a fan of full grill guards. I love that look with some big ole' lights in the middle.

 

I agree with 007, bull bar or full brush guard with rally lights in the center.... its an awesome look for these trucks... or any truck

 

As some of you may know, I've been bttling this issue for some time now. Several weeks ago, I stated that Toyota had fixed my vibration problem by placing in a new drive shaft. Well, sorry to say, the vibration came back in a weeks time. To make a very long story short, after battling it out with Toyota corp. and two different toyota dealerships, the end result of this issue is that it is a normal vibration and that all Tacomas have it. The same day that I recieved the verdict, I test drove a brand spanking new '08 Tacoma. Out of my amazement, once when 70 mph was reached, the truck shuddered worst than mine!!! Not only that, while the truck was moving straight down the road, that steering wheel was cocked WAY to the side!!! What the heck is going on here ladies and gents? Where have these trucks gone to that we have fallen so in love with?? They are going to have to come up with a recall on this issue or a fix.

What kind of Geolanders did you get? Are they H/T S, H/T, M/T, A/T-II, or the A/Ts? I just bought some 16" steelies(spare wheel rim) for my 07 sport that I'm putting the M/T's on. Several of the Land Cruisers in TTR run them, I've only been in one and went 7 hour round trip and a days worth of wheeling. They also have the 16" wheels, just not steelies. Never had any problems.

 

Sorry to hear your still having problems. a slight vibration or shudder is fairly common but what you're describing is not normal. hopefully you can get this taken care of

 

I am having the TSB done that adds another leaf spring and also replaces my shocks with new shocks at all corners.

Do ya'll think that this will work??

 

i doubt it, the problem doesn't sound like its from the suspension but the drivetrain somewhere, or tires
