    It's amazing to think that less than forty years ago, almost every gasoline-powered production vehicle had a carburetor!

    It's a shame seeing that cutlass in the junkyard. It looks like it was well taken care of, sad to see it end up there. A lot of nostalgia in that bodystyle/era of cars

    Murilee photographed this car at a pick-and-pull salvage yard in California's Central Valley, but here's proof that the car was not originally from the Golden State...

    This car was last inspected in the spring of 1988, and then the owner either moved to California or sold it to someone who lived there, and the stickers were never removed; If this car was registered in a county the required annual smog testing (a few sparsely populated counties, and certain parts of San Bernardino County, do not require smog testing), then it likely had to be fitted with California-specific emissions equipment in order to pass smog...

    :amen:

    I would have bought it, even if it wasn't easy to retrofit it with A/C; I would have shined it up real nice, put one hell of a stereo system in it, and taken it cruise nights...

    There are a lot of people who bring what I like to call "nostalgia cars" to car shows and cruise nights in my area; A prime example would be a mint, unrestored 1984 Dodge Caravan I saw a couple years ago. With the exception of the A/C being retrofitted to R134a and wear items like tires being replaced, the van was 100% original down to the factory AM radio!

    As much as A/C is a necessity for me in a vehicle, I honestly think that not having A/C makes the silver 1982 Cutlass unique, and I'd likely leave it alone. This looks like the type of car a 16-year old would have gotten as a hand-me-down from a grandparent or an elderly neighbor, the type of car that makes any newly licensed driver happy to have a car, even if it lacks air-conditioning and may be perceived as uncool by some. If I could track down one of those 1980s Pioneer SuperTuner systems, I would install it in this car, and put a 1980s era football sticker from my high school in the the back window!

    In the comments on Murilee Martin's page, one person believes it ended up in the junkyard because it was likely a dealer trade that went to a wholesale auction, and nobody wanted it specifically because it did not have A/C; Another theory I remember seeing was that the elderly original owner died and the family member(s) who inherited it did not want it because it didn't have A/C. Murilee posted the pictures in April 2018, so the car had low miles for being 35 years old!

    @BobcatSR

    A decent 1988 Cutlass Cruiser that Murilee found in a junkyard in North Dakota...

    Ironically, this car came from Fargo!

    This 1989 model has A/C and an AM/FM radio though!

    That sounds like a great time! Cruise nights sound like a blast, and that olds would be a great cruiser. My mom had an old plymouth voyager when I was growing up, it had the fake wood siding and a plymouth emblem that wouldn't stay upright on the hood! I have a lot of great memories with that van! But yeah man that would be a sweet set up, period correct stickers are a really nice detail! :thumbsup:

    Got a quick couple coats of light gray paint on the door and it turned out great, gonna pick up some cheap door knobs from Walmart and it will be good to go.
