Thinking of painting my 2nd gen quicksand over the summer. Has anyone done this/had it done? Can’t seem to find anything.

Show some pictures of your trucks!

You’d be the first that I’ve seen man, go for it! There’s a guy that lives somewhere in my neighborhood that painted his 2nd Gen the 3rd Gen Cement color. Looks lifted about 6” on what appears to be 35s, breaks my neck every time

Quicksand is definitely a cool color, but remember, repainting any vehicle - especially with a color change - will kill the resale value. A well done color change will run you at least $6,000.

I’ve priced out paint materials from afew places, I have a spray booth to use and professional guidance as my friend is an auto body painter.

for anyone else who wants to do their taco here is a recommended materials list for colour change:

    -1 1/2 gallons base coat
    -5L clearcoat
    -2 1/2L clearcoat hardener
    -1 1/2 gallons epoxy primer
    -2 quarts epoxy primer catalyst
    -1 gallon primer surfacer
    -1 quart primer activator

I got quotes from afew different shops on these quantities and the total price for this list is on average 1500 CAD. I figure add another 500$ for sandpaper and necessary prep equipment and I’m looking at 2000$ for materials.

I plan on updating this thread regularly as I work through the process for anyone else’s taco-painting reference.

Just curious. Are you planning on pulling the motor everything under the hood and do a true color change. Literally taking to shell. Look forward to seeing it when done.

It’s going to depend on how much patience I have left after sanding the rest of the vehicle lol.

Cool idea, but I'm not sure you realize just how HUGE of a job that is, done right. Especially on a truck. Not for the faint of heart, but good luck!

1F466FCE-2896-4BB1-B41E-508DF21DAEEE.jpg Here’s a quick photoshop visualization of the quicksand on my truck.

I do, my dad did this same job on his mustang (not quicksand though) with a bit more body work involved. Him and my painter friend have stressed this to me, but I’d rather learn to do it myself and have this as a skill than pay someone thousands to do it for me.
    Appreciate the concern!

Have you looked into a color matched wrap vs painting? Might be more expensive, but probably way easier. Plus you get a bit of protection from scratches and whatnot

One of the big reasons I’m painting is because I have some major body work to do, so I’m going to have to take it down to bare metal in afew places to get the filler to adhere. Haven’t looked much into wrapping, but I am getting an exceptional price on paint at lordco through a friend of mine; not sure if lordco supplies wraps or not.

The materials are the least expensive part. In fact I always tell people that the actual spraying on of the paint is the easiest part. The toughest (and most costly) part is proper prep work. And by prep I mean dis-assembly, sanding, priming, filling, masking, repairs, etc. Properly done, the prep will take weeks. The paint? Less than a day.

Good thing there’s a pandemic going on giving me more time than I know what to do with! Might make me more inclined to drop the engine and do the engine bay too lol...
Trust me, I’m not someone who will half-ass a job. Rather do it proper the first time.

    Thanks!

No, ended up taking long enough (4x8+ hour days) just pulling dents and filling. The truck had a lot of damage. I think this summer I may do it and rattle can the engine bay black. Overall this project took me just under 10 days of work.

Amazing nonetheless. You may have sacrificed time but you learned valuable if not priceless info along the way. Thank you for sharing, I keep drooling.
