Keep it under 25MPH and never use it on hard dry surfaces

From what I've gathered from the desert folks on TTORA, there is no "speed limit". Just don't engage it unless your going under 5MPH, other than that go wild.

Welcome to TW. The book will say keep it to a max of 5mph. If you are sensible faster is ok I would keep it off the pavement when using it. If you are riding in sand lock it before you enter, if on black top avoid making hard turns keep them big.

not a good idea on pavement to have it locked because of the way tires grip pavement differently than dirt or gravel. plus, it can cause the gears to implode i think.

is it only on dry pavement where its bad? what about snow and rain on pavement? or is it just good for mud and sand.

i used mine when it snowed but when you lose traction with both wheels spinning you really have no control of the rear so you have to becareful

Anytime where slipping can occur. Loose surfaces such as sand, dirt, gravel, mud, snow, wet grass. Unless you're encountering some severe winter weather, there is really no need to lock the rear diff. on pavement.

A little late in posting... but I searched the form out, because my buddy locked my 2006's diff on pavement, for about 20 miles.

He was trying to figure out to turn on the lights and started hitting buttons. Managed to lock the diff, I hopped in the truck, booted him shotgun and started driving. I drove around town, max speeds of 50mph, taking all the turns you would in normal city driving. I don't think I noticed any difference in driving, non which would cause me to check the instrument cluster and suspect a problem.

Needless to say, I eventually found the indicator blinking, and started cussing up a storm, remembering the little sticker, (I instantly ripped off upon purchase) Toyota conveniently placed on the door telling me NEVER to drive over 5, on pavement, or turn the truck.

No issues to speak of so far. No catastrophic noises, no rattles, no difference in driving both in city and on HWY, for about 150 miles or so.

Anything I should look out for from people that have had a problem? I've got a 30k service coming up in about 6 thousand miles, which I may just perform early so I can tear the pumpkin off and check for gear guts.

    Sitting in a parking lot...

Although I'm a bit embarrassed to ask this, I've never actually noticed... Does the light stay lit to indicate the locked diff, or does it just flash on and off? I haven't had the heart to push the button since the incident..

    Mine was flashing...
