My Tacoma is a 2009 model, I live in AZ and the paint is trashed. every horizontal surface the paint is coming off. The roof is rusting and the leading edge of the hood is down to the primer. When I talked with Toyota about this issue they asked if the truck was garage kept. I drove the truck to work every day and parked in a parking lot. The paint color was dark metalic blue. I have seen many other trucks in the area the same color with the same problem. Toyota is treating this like a one off issue and I know it is not. Any other folks with the same or similar problem?

I've heard that white Toyotas have particularly bad paint issues...

Your truck is 11 years old and lived in the Arizona heat . Did you take any extra precautions with the paint . :notsure: I would have kept it heavily polished and waxed . I’m in Upstate NY and wax my truck about 4 times a year .

I'd say a lot of the darker colored Tacoma's around town where I live have this issue. The dark blue, black and red that I see. I have a dark blue (BRM) 14'Tacoma and made sure to ceramic coat it when I got it. So far so good.

Seems like you may need a paint job. .

A lot of people don’t care about their painted vehicles. It goes to shit kinda like oil does if you don’t change it out. Only difference is taking care of the paint job to keep it looking fresh. Everyone is always looking for a recall these days to try and not have to pay for anything themselves.

regular maintenance keeps things fresh man.

Nice link but that info is horribly outdated. Nobody uses chamois any more. If I want to keep finish nice now I’d wash it then blow dry then touch up any chips or imperfections then polish the clear coat using Rupes system follow that up with mild 50/50 alchohol/ water wipe down. Now it’s ready for ceramic coating. Done correctly ceramic will last five years. Go to the forum here on maintaining your paint finishes, see what professional detailers are using. It ain’t wax. Using the Rupes you can polish headlights and taillights too. The ceramic will also work on the windows, better than any rain x you’ve ever seen. Look at some YouTube videos to see what’s possible.

Curious what your end goal is here? Are you trying to confirm if folks in other areas outside of AZ have this same issue, and then use that coupled with those in your area to try and build a case to go back to Toyota with?

I will say that originally I used to view most of these body paint failing threads as owner induced issues (i.e. lack of paint maintenance care, storage conditions, etc.), however, I'm at least now a little more open to maybe that not being entirely the case anymore. Just based on some of the Tacoma paint failures I've been seeing, including my own truck, have me wondering if there is an inherit issue in the OEM paint system. Problem is, unless someone takes the time to properly build a case (i.e. research, document, technical analysis, etc.) and prove that, kind of like the frame failure fiasco, then you'll probably have little-to-no luck in getting Toyota to acknowledge any fault on their end for an 11 year old truck. Plus, objectively speaking at some point it does start getting to be ludicrous to expect manufacturers to essentially provide a lifetime warranty...when does it ever end?

I can remember being a young lad of 5 or 6 years old in the early 70s and my grandfather parking his '69 Chevy truck in the shade whenever possible. He would always tell me "bird shit and the sun are hell on paint".

I'm 51 and I still wipe off bird poop as soon as I see it. :D

Haha!! I do the same. 38 here, ALWAYS park in the shade if possible, headlights face away from the sun at all time, truck is waxed every other month, and trim aerospaced every wash. Clayed every purchase anniversary (February 25th)

Lacquer was even worse. The reason 'barn find' cars still have paint....the barn.

I use this every couple of months or so. Headlights are 5 years old....tails are 7.5 years old.

I use aerospace for now, but I will switch to this when I can see the clear starting to fade. I did it in my cobra and it works like a champ

Sounds like a solid case. No way Toyota will be able to refute that. ;)
