I find myself often having my hands full when trying to open my tailgate and will drop it. I feel for the relatively low price and ease of installation it’s a worth while purchase but not a must.

i recommend the ez down tailgate assist through rock auto. works well for me, though others have had issues with some pinching (but looks fixable).

i have a mountain hatch which makes the tailgate a little heavier and i don't like other people slamming it down when they open my tailgate or having to guide it down everytime.

definitely not necessary but neither are most of the stock things on our trucks. just makes life slightly easier so why not.

The one from @christian06 appears to be much slicker than any 'store bought' option I've seen.

yea that is pretty slick. a little bit more involved and i have heard of the 3rd gen dampeners don't hold up well over time though. whats the price for this ?

    Full kit is $280 + 12 shipping
    Partial kit $109 + 10 shipping

You may be able to source the dampener and dampener bracket cheaper than my dealer, its $239 just for those 2 pieces. I got mine for $40 from a private seller.
