solar panels on the roof would work for charging if you worked nights; and the truck was parked and plugged in all day. Otherwise it would require a lot of expensive batteries to store the power.

EVs are interesting, but they don’t really save anything. They are more expensive to produce, produce more pollution and toxic chemicals being produced, and the gas savings just turns in to higher electric bills at home. I still don’t see the purpose for them. Someday these issues will be figured out, as there is a demand for it, but it is not today.

I drive an older Honda Accord for commuting to work. Cheap on gas, insurance, and I just spent 300 bucks on new tires installed. It’s not bad

The only truck I'd get rid of my Tacoma for would be an F150 Lariat.

Just an observation but when an electric car/truck question comes up it is almost always from the west coast. That and the auto in question is usually very $$$$ or butt ugly. I guess living in the Midwest we like our trucks to look like trucks and do truck things first and foremost and you just work around the rest.

I kid. Not everyone from Cali has that mentality, but considering how big of a percentage of the total US population lives here and the common way of thinking, it’s not really a surprise.

No, that's the thing about solar cells. They charge anytime there is sunlight, even when it is cloudy or while you're driving.

No, clouds will kill solar production, it's not just daylight that PV panels can then convert in to energy, you need direct sunlight and putting them on the roof is a far from ideal angle (unless you live on the equator) which means the efficiency of the panels will be diminished in a major way. The benefit of panels on the roof is really nonexistent. Putting a wind turbine on your vehicle that charges while you drive would be more efficient than a solar array would ever be.

I understand the electric Cybertruck has over 600k reservations at this point. The futuristic appearance has apparently grown on the people after the shock wore off.

Tesla should be making a big battery announcement sometime this month via livestream. Rumor is they will announce a million mile electric motor and a new battery technology that has been under development via the Roadrunner project. The current battery packs are good for 300-500k miles.

Battery tech is the biggest concern (IMO) for these vehicles. While they may hold some resemblance of a charge for 300k-500k miles, there are so many variables that can drastically reduce that.

I would just get a couple solar panels for the garage and charge them on the weekend or overnight. I'm gonna get one when I wear this 19 out. Should be pretty good timing.

Battery technology will improve so much by 2030 that it will make the current ones outdated. We are still using laptop battery technology.

There is always a risk being on the front side of a curve. Market volatility could always have the potential for some of these companies to go out of business. It’s a tough decision to make due to the hefty investment. That being said. I like the Rivian R1T

I think the Nikola looks kinda bad ass. 0-60 in 2.9, 600 mile range and can pull 8000#. Pretty impressive specs....if real
A bit pricey but not out of line with what a loaded Tesla Y costs.
The thought of no engine maintenance and not purchasing gas is a plus.
But.....you'll have to rip my Tacoma from my cold dead hands first :D

Put my order in for the 3 motor AWD Cybertruck about 3 weeks after they went live online. Hope to get it by the Fall of 2021 but it will probably be delayed. Tows 14,000 lbs and 0-60 in 2.9 seconds, which is faster than my Porsche 911 Turbo did it in (!). I skipped on the autopilot so I'm looking at about $64k. If there is a Fed rebate that number should drop another 5K or so....

I like the idea of the stainless steel body panels, and I live about two miles from a dozen SuperChargers. My commute is 60 miles/day and honestly, I love the looks of it. I'm thinking an Army Green wrap and a matching trail camper to pull behind it. Yeah, I'm pretty stoked about it. If it turns out to be a total turd I'll just off it and move on. No biggie, but I'm so curious I just had to pull the trigger...

I would love to. Having at least one EV would be ideal, the other just gas or gas hybrid. The feeling of passing by gas stations, no emissions issues, oil changes, coolant changes, etc, is exhilarating. Even with a Prius, you save so much on gas and that is just money back on your pocket. Like an OH OH OH orgasm....

Apparently, you haven't been keeping up on SP technology. There is now SP's that use UV light instead of direct sunlight to convert energy into electricity. NASA and the military R&D are also conducting experiments to convert microwaves to electricity using "solar panels".
