What paint did you use?

I used three cans for that section under the bed, the trailer hitch and the frame rails (inside and outside in the wheel wells). I have six more cans on hand for the remainder of the frame, the driveshafts and anything else I feel like painting under the front. I’m working my way forward as I’m planning to have the power steering rack out of the truck soon...

 

I used that last fall, but it didn't look as good as yours. I didn't prep very well though.

 

I’m curious to see how my rear drums turn out. They look horrendous right now but I’m hoping after I grind and wire brush them they’ll look good enough for paint. I also bought a phosphate chemical treatment that’s supposed to turn rust a silver color and prevent it from spreading or coming back. I’m going to hit them with that then clean them really well before I paint.

 

Is that the por-15 metal prep stuff for the phosphate coating? Or something else?

I didn't realize that was also for metal. Definitely a better option than buying POR 15 Prep & Ready, paying for shipping and waiting.

 

Yep, I found it at my local Home Depot and one jug is more than enough to do the entire frame if you wanted. I’m only planning on using it on the heavy rust build up and my rear drums. I didn’t even open it when I did that back section but now that I think about it, I probably should have used it on the trailer hitch. Oh well.

Ha, if I’m being honest, I’d prefer to never remove the hitch again... Between the headache of getting it free and replacing the rusted out rear bumper support bar, that project was a disaster. I ended up having to replace most of the bolts because they either broke during removal or were too rusted to be reused.

And I can’t tell if you’re serious about deleting the hitch or not, but if you are, you’ll need to buy the two support plates that come on non tow package vehicles. Otherwise, you can’t mount the rear bumper bar to the frame once the hitch is out. They can be found relatively inexpensive, I almost bought a pair when I had the hitch off last time so I could still drive the truck while I worked on it. But when I found out how bad the rear bumper bar was rusted I opted to keep the truck off the road while I waited on the replacement bar to arrive.

Hmmm... I still have my original LCAs and one of these days I may burn the old bushings out and clean them up and paint them. Would be great to replace the ball joints and the bushings with these and have basically a brand new set to install in the truck when the Moog replacements fail.

I took my rear hitch off just fine, without removing the bumper I'm pretty sure, and put the plate bumper in its place.

 

Haha, I get it now.

And yeah, the hitch and bumper will come off the truck together. My problem was getting the hitch to separate from the rear bumper so I could work on cleaning it up. It was so basically fused to the rear bumper bar due to how badly rusted they both were...

 

I was surprised that my bumper and hitch were so heavy. I have extra leafs being delivered tomorrow because I thought I’d need them,, but I don’t think I’ll be adding that much extra weight in the back with my new bumper.

I have an OEM bumper with the hitch if anyone wants to come get it.

 

It has a hole for a 7 way and a dent from Windrock. Missing one of the round things.

 

I could swear your truck was dark blue when you came to Rush... I'm losing it haha
