Holy chit, I've done a lot already!!
So I've been contemplating/looking at Tundra's recently. Specifically 2016-2018's with the 5.7L. My wife whines every time about the room for the dog, so I'm using this for an angle on the new truck. I've recently lost my AC, worry about my frame, need new ball joints, and tailgate is starting to show it's age. I enjoy no payment, but I'm not interested in making a payment on parts every month either. A side note, my wife has a 2007 Xterra, that she won't give up. I'm happy she loves her truck, but I'm getting tired of repairing both all the time. Talk me into or out of it....

It’s bigger, heavier, and will cost more to fix when it goes wrong later with less aftermarket support. It’s always the better financial choice to repair the OK truck then replace it. The problem is that you have to the same age, you need to stagger. Maybe newer tacoma?

really though, get it if you want. Plus it will tow that xterra when it really starts to break down...

A new frame for your present Tacoma will cost a fortune if it's not covered by Toyota. If you need to buy another truck. Buy one that suits your needs and will make you (and the wife) happy. l love not having a truck payment as well, but I'm completely happy with my Tacoma.
If you're looking at used, you might be able to get a great deal nowadays because no one's buying much.

Good luck and keep us posted

You asked us to talk you out of it.
All I got is, the MPG is not good.

I think it has been rumored the next Gen will get a Turbo V6?

I could never own a Tundra because of the screwed up door handles. On the DC, the front door handles don’t match the rear. On the AC, they put the AC handle on the outside.

I'm on the edge of the recall. I had the "wonderful" CRC sprayed on the frame. That sh!t is garbage. Tis the reason I worry about the frame.

Better to replace one of them now and not both of them at the same time down the road.

I’d much prefer a Tacoma over a tundra. Toyota’s reputation wasn’t built on tundra.

I recommend to buy a Prius and pocket the boatloads of cash you will save for gas mileage.

Get rid of the wife. The amount of money saved By doing this will more than pay for the Tacoma’s repairs. Use excess money to upgrade to a younger chick that doesn’t whine.

These are the factors you could consider...

Have a trusted mechanic do an inspection of your current truck, they’d be able to give you an idea of where your vehicle stands and what repairs may be in your future including the level of frame rust.

Then do the math on what repairs are most likely in the next 5 years. If that cost is greater then a new vehicle, then financially it would make sense to purchase a new one. A quick look at used V8 Tundra Crew Cab pricing of 30-40k in the Buffalo NY area.

What are your needs of the vehicle? Tundras offer better towing for sure, and more room. They also use more gas, and tend to cost more for maintenance. They are larger and may not fit in your current garage (assuming you park the taco in one) and may increase your insurance costs. Being larger, it may not be suited for some off road trails.

Then it’s all about wants, which have no financial or practical means of measure. Tundras sound better, look bigger (and some say look better), more spacious, it’ll be newer, and have more updated tech. Mods? There is a growing market but, there is not as big of a support than tacos. Features? The only thing I’ve seen that tacos have over tundras is off road tech (Lockers and MTS/Crawl)

I don’t know how much help that was ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ good luck with your decision

X can't pull the camper, plus the Taco has more space

Wife or truck? Serious though, that's some of my concern. To go from no payments to 2 large ones would suck.

That's true... But not sure a younger chick would whine less...

This is kind of where I'm at. I am my own trusted mechanic, as not many get to work on my truck. I like my midsize sooo much, but I'm sure I'd enjoy the ease of towing and more room overall of the Tundra. Taco only goes in the barn for repairs, and I've thought about the fact the Tundra might be tight in the winter when the camper is parked in there.

Do you like the truck? Keep it if you do.
As for repairs which is costing more in that aspect? That's the one to get rid of.

The taco has more space and she's bitching about space... Go find a used limo. There'll be plenty of room for you and the dog while she's driving...
