Hey all. Just finalized purchase yesterday.

I am one of those people I need a truck but when I don’t I need a trunk. I have been reading around the forums and have received several ideas for cargo hauling.
most importantly I need a cover.
I would really like a hard tri fold or roll up cover to use as much bed space as I can if I need it.

so far I have seen Tonno Pro, Bak Flip, Peregon, and some others.
I also would like one that would leave my rails unimpeded if that’s possible. I’m hoping to Keep it 500-600 but willing to pay more for quality.

Interested in thoughts for a newbie who knows little?

Are you going to be doing any other mods like bed rack? If not, I have the MX4 BakFlip low profile. Pretty sturdy (trifold), had a drop bracket to keep the bed rails, and I just like the look overall plus the security aspect of it.

This is a picture when I first bought my Bakflip (immediately after I purchased my truck as well):
    Bakflip MX4.jpg

after almost 2 years it still looks clean and not faded. They are a bit pricy though.

Try looking on Craigslist. I have a factory/dealership cover that came on the truck It’s decent I get just a tiny bit of leaking.

    Might want to PM @GotExhaust.

    Details in this thread: https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/lomax-hard-tri-fold-tonneau.607175/

Just got a quote and LoMax is definitely now on my contenders list.

I have a Lomax on my truck and am very happy with it. Thankfully I haven’t ever had any water in the bed after heavy storms. There is a thread over under the tonneau section that can save you some money. Lucas Kyle at Truck Alterations was great to deal with.

I have had my Access roll up on for a few years and like it. Light, easy install, affordable, works well and doesn't let much water in at all.

I'm a fan of the bakflip. I love mine. Keeps whatever crap I have covered and out of sight, it's a nice solid material, and sooo easy to remove if you need the extra space.

My roll up is perfect for when I need to carry large items. It is a soft cover but it was fairly cheap and even the hard cover aren’t really burglar proof either.

I had similar criteria and went with the Lomax. Great price ($665), looks good, bed rails remain in place and you can still use them. And the whole thing can be removed in well under a minute.

I have to ask how you got that price. Their own website says starting at 1100?!

When you have the chance can you take a pick of the release mechanism? Thanks in advance.

Gotexhaust just quoted me $665 for one earlier this week and Lucas at Truck Alterations $660, I'm guessing its closer to cost for them and they have liberty with pricing. Bakflip and other bigger brands not so much which is why you don't see massive discounts as they set the price, etc. for vendors. But I assure you you can get the lomax for $660 from a few vendors here, no problem.

Can you close the tailgate with the cover down?

I've heard nothing but good reviews on this cover, I had a bakflip mx4 and my dad has one on his Raptor, one small hail storm later looks like absolute sh*t. Lomax design should be less likely to dent than the MX4. Bakflip is notorious for terrible customer service and unfinished pieces, missing parts, etc.

I recently bought a low profile cover from Rough Country. It's a little pricey (IMHO), but worth it. I had bought a used off FB market that was tri-fold vinyl cover. Tyger has some decent pricing, but the vinyl one wasn't what I had originally wanted. I wanted to get an OEM one, but couldn't find one in my local area. One thing Rough Country does is allow you to finance through Affirm (if you need that option--many others do this as well).

They also have another hard cover and vinyl cover if that is more to your choosing.

Here's the link for the one I bought:
    https://www.roughcountry.com/toyota...0500c.html?find=2016-toyota-tacoma-4wd-567120

It took about 45-1 hr to install. And that was only because you have do some removing of the front lip of the bed to put some spacers on the end of it. Overall, I like my cover, it looks great, and haven't had any issues.

Just an FYI: their design has tubes that drain water and some people might drill a hole through the bedliner for the tubes. It's not required, and we don't get a lot downpours here in Mississippi like that might in the Pacific Northwest.

Here's a video if you are just so curious:

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2Fkj9UFDc-8&t=508s

    Hope this helps!
