So my new tacoma that I just got last week has a rebuilt title. The seller didnt tell me that. He was unaware that the truck had rebuilt title. At first, i figured he was just pulling my leg and was lying on purpose to get rid of the truck.

Last night, I spent 35 bux on a carfax and 30 bux on a autocheck report. The truck did receive a salvage title in California, where it was originally bought. this salvage alert comes up out of no where. It doesnt list anything about a wreck or anything. The truck was sold then to Michigan where it received a rebuilt title. The truck was registered there. Then when it was sold to Illinois, it does not list anything about a rebuilt title.

Then last night, I also checked with the local dmv website. I entered in the vin and it will give you registration info etc. Well this is what it shows.

    VIN: 5TEWN72N41Z727978
    Title Number: X0293690839
    Application Number: 8026009593
    Most recent title issuance: 10/20/2010
    Type of title: Original
    Lienholder? Yes
    Multi-owner Yes/No? No
Is better address needed for mailing? No
Is vehicle tagged as rebuilt? No
Is vehicle tagged as having flood damage? No

So now Im confused. The state of illinois has not registered it as a rebuilt title. So now I am leaning to believe the guy I bought the truck off of. Cause the whole time its been in illinois, its been seen as a clear title.

As far as the truck, I have no problems with it. It runs great, it only has 79k on it, its a solid truck. The frame is solid as a rock, without the recall even being performed.

What do you guys think of the deal? I was planning on selling the truck anyways, I only paid $8k for it. So I was gonna try to make a little money on it, but now with its record, Im just gonna hope to get my 8k back out of it.

The rebuilt status should continue to be noted on your Illinois title. 'Rebuilt' status doesn't mean that everyone can forget the earlier 'Salvage' status - it only means that the vehicle was rebuilt and passed a state inspection to be certified as roadworthy.

I'd suggest you contact the DMV and find out why your title isn't annotated 'Rebuilt'. It should be ...

I guess IMO that it depends on how the vehicle was advertized, Is the rebuild note on the title highlighted as to draw attention to it, I would think it would be, I have read where vehicles that were salvage, were transfered from state to state and after a few title changes the fact that they were salvage was lost in the paper work, if it were me I would contact a lawyer, or your states attorney general and see what your options are, maybe a threat of a law suit may persuade the previous owner to take it back or give you some of your money back. I always ask when buying used if its a one owner, or at least look at the title before forking over the cash, if you sell it you may be on the other end of law suit if you knowingly sell it with a rebuild/salvage title, good luck!

if I sell it, I will sell it with the rebuilt title attached. I dont lie to buyers. I will sell it as a rebuilt vehicle, so i wont be on any end of a lawsuit. If I were to try and sell the truck as a clean and clear title and they found out it was rebuilt, then I could be screwed.

What really confuses me is that the title says original on it. There is no signs of rebuilt or salvage on it.

Everyone in the state of illinois sees it as a clean and clear title. Even on the carax, it doesnt show the details of why it was issued a salvage title. it just comes up out of no where. I have seen other vehicles with with accident details on the carfax, this truck has nothing.

I guess Ill just have to call the Sec. of state and find out why the truck isnt showing up as a rebuilt in Illinois.

Stolen and sold at auction? Sometimes auction vehicles get salvage titles, don't they?

I kinda thought of that, but from what ive been reading, it only works that way if it was a dealer.

Being a personal seller, i bought the truck "as is", so im kinda screwed there.

I did a lot of searching around last night online. The truck has been a victim of title washing. Basically, where the title is "washed" away of its previous history. This is not really illegal, its more of a fault in the laws. Every state has different laws and regulations on what they consider to be rebuilt or salvage. So what happens is, the title can be rebuilt in one state, in my case, Michigan, then be transferred to another, more lenient state, Illinois, and the truck is given a clear title cause its damage was not the limit Illinois has for salvaging a title.

So as far as Illinois is concerned, the truck is a clean and clear title. The rebuilt/salvage history though, will always be on the history report.

I am gonna sell it either way, im not wanting to keep it around with the history, but I dont doubt someone will give me $k for it, even with its history. The truck is a solid running truck, looks good, low miles, so it will sell.
