I've been missing a lot of action on here. Some work on my truck finally got the coils to cycle/strap and bump.

Newbie welder checking in. Picked up a cheapo HF flux welder for $100 on sale a couple weekends ago. Planning on making a very simple rear bumper out of 2x4 1/8th, for my 94 pickup.

Picking up the steel tomorrow, and will post progress pics! Total material cost was $62.

What’s everyone’s go to mig wire for carbon steel?

I’ve been using the Hobart er70s-6 .030 wire off Amazon in a 10 pound spool and the pricing just hopped up another $12 a spool. Now at $41 vs the previous $28

Starts to add up when buying a few spools at a time

L-56 from Lincoln. It’s not cheap, but it runs real nice. Also your return on investment is really high with mig wire if you charge correctly. I’d say it’s safe to say every 10lb spool makes you at the minimum a few thousand

haven’t run the Lincoln stuff yet but I’ll give it a shot. I’d agree the return on mig wire gives room for huge margins and I go through a ten pounder every month or so

i used to buy 30 pounders and one 30 pounder of Viking was the same price as the 10 pounder of Lincoln. I felt like I never had to change those reels, now with the 10 pound reels I feel like I have to change it every few weeks.

same here. Going from a miller 252 with 30 pounders to the smaller miller 211 and 10 pounders I’m constantly changing them out.

Especially if I have to do a bunch of plate bumpers, or trusses, etc it goes quick

That's pretty interesting and a great use of dead space. I'm always looking at something to make, to screw up and catch on fire...this fits the bill and thank you for posting.

But have you not spent any money paying someone to fix something that you fixed for free yourself?

When you put it that way...

CMC, almost and entire trailer (that wasn’t for me), bike mounts, couple of chairs and tables, and about to finish up a rear bumper. I guess it has done me well.

That might be the best Return on Investment for some 2x4s that I've ever heard of! I like the plastic tie wraps they had holding the angle brackets in place too.
