You can't wrap it with peeling clearcoat so you must sand it all down first and fix the rust and any imperfections. Once you do the complete sand down you might as well paint the roof and hood. Lots of work: sand, fix depressions, prime, resand, 3-4 coats paint, then 4-5 coats clearcoat and then you have to buff the hell out of it to get it smooth and shiny. I used Automotive Touchup a Microfinish LLC company out of New Orleans for all the paint and clearcoat about $200. Used 4 cans of each to do hood and roof. I got loaded spray cans in factory color and looks pretty good but a pain in the ass to do it all and lots of time.
Lots of masking tape, sandpaper, plastic to protect windows etc. And you still have other horizontal surfaces like door top edge clearcoat failing unless you want to spot fix all of those too. Good luck and buy lots of beer if you attempt.

Wait. Am I reading this right? A guy with an 11 year old truck actually called Toyota about his paint? No wonder we came up with the term Karen.
Dude. Paint your truck or derp it. Pay for it like everyone else. Next thing you know people are going to be contacting toyota when they need more gas.

15 years old. Sat mostly outside in the TX heat for all of those with a ton of time in the sand on the coast. Roof paint peeled and plenty of wear and tear all over. I’m sure I’ll get roasted for this lol but the least expensive maaco paint job was awesome about a year ago. They fixed the roof (I watched much of this part to make sure they didn’t just paint over and I was curious) and scratches/minor dents and repainted. Guy was very honest with me. You keep it outside in the sun on the beach and you’ll be back in 5 years with the cheap job and it will look like it does now, but the roof will be good and shouldn’t peel. The high end job was about 7x more. no brainer for me and very happy with the results thus far. i figure when it turns 25 I’ll give it another bday present. In comparison, I have a 12 year old sequoia that has spent MUCH more time in a garage and the paint still looks new.

I bought white thinking it would do the best in the sun. Granted I live in the desert... bought my 2013 taco a few months ago. Waxed it with McGuires ultra wax last week and looks good. Yes rock chip them sobs. So how are other super whites holding up?

When I bought my 2008 a couple years ago, my roof had the same problem. Previous owner did not give a single shit about the paint which resulted in oxidation with the Texas heat. I got it fully painted and take care of it every week to keep it looking pristine

    OME and worth every penny.
Along those lines and seeing what happens to truck roofs, I think if I bought new I'd wrap the roof.

Trucks seem to be the worst, never see mini-vans with peeling roofs and I know those soccer Moms aren't waxing them.

I’ve never tried to wrap anything on a car but it seems to me the roof would be an easy diy job

Have to wrap it before it peels or will not stick down and if uneven areas will show thru wrap.

Problem with the roof is that it also has clearcoat fade/chalking/peeling not only on the main area between the 1.5" rubber strips but out over the raised areas of roof above the doors (lucky hard to see unless you climb up there to see it) so if you wrap them you have to decide where to stop - like wrap around to the top door openings. When I painted the roof and hood I just ignored those areas for now as hard to see and if I do them I have to do a fade/blend down into the side of truck paint and I was not yet a good enough painter to feel I could do it well. Then the areas under each window that are horizontal surfaces also fades so where do you stop.

Bottom line is its a truck to be used hard so only did the big visual areas. If you want to look perfect spend the $5-6k for a full pro paint job. As a note if you get a quote from a pro shop that has a guarantee they will want to pull the bed off/back to paint the rear of roof down the cab rear so for them to paint roof and hood about $2k (not a Maaco job).

    ....can I offer a suggestion?
...if your not to fussy; try a local High School that offers auto body work. They are always with oversight from professional forks in the trade and you can help a student and you'll get a great end results at a lower price.
    Just a suggestion.....Go Team TW!

So, I was not looking to start a legal action. I was just looking for similar issues from other owners. This seemed to be a place where other owners would congregate, and I hope the genius who stated that "Arizona is hot" is not a good representation of the forum population. I am so thankful for that insight. That observational gem has made me more aware of my surroundings. The intent was to find others who might have has the same experience. I also own a Scion and the paint is suffering a similar fate. I have many friends with other brands of cars that are not facing the same issues with paint. I have seen many other Tacoma's and Scions on the road with the same paint colors with the same issues. I think that is not acceptable for the paint to degrade so quickly even given the environmental extremes here in AZ. For a vehicle that costs as much as these the paint should last longer than 11 years. By the way this has been an issue for the past five years. Toyota is selling cars here in Arizona they are aware of the environmental issues. They are quick to take our money. I hope that I have a much better reaction to others on this forum when they have an mechanical issues, a response of "well you started the car up should expect wear would occur" If you kept it parked under a tree it would not wear out so soon.

So in 4015 days plus or 96,360 hours. You honestly expect your paint to hold up to muster.

I got sunburned once. Think I can sue god for not making humans with tougher skin? I mean millions of years and they still haven’t fixed this issue!!!!! Come on!!!!

I've got some of the clear peeling off my tailgate on my Silver 07 but that's the worst of it. And probably my fault for never waxing...

You aren’t looking to sue but it’s clear by the fact you contacted toyota that you hoped to get a free paint job. Why else would you call them? As far as Arizona goes, why would toyota plan their paint formulas for Arizona when they sell these trucks all over the world? Yes many of us have faded or peeling clear coat on our trucks but no one gets bent about it if the truck is 11 years old. You are unreasonable with your entitled expectations. Sure there will be people falling over each other yo assist you with mechanical issues. But if you post how you are pissed that your Dunlops went bald after 60k miles we are going to give you some shit.

You got rid of the regular skid plate? I stacked the TRD skid over the regular skid cause it looks better than having just the TRD skid
