It wasn't legal around here. Stuff was stolen but he never had any repercussions one way or the other. The thefts stopped after doing that.

Probably considered a booby trap, with fines and imprisonment and lawsuits.

    California code:

I hate to be this guy, but Youtube and the internet is ruined for me. I can say, with a fair amount of certainty, that these are fake. The fact that they don't notice the cable, they're all wearing long sleave shirts and jeans (for the impending crash), and it appears that one of the guys braces for the wreck, before the crash begins. Not to mention, this is HIGHLY illegal (booby trapping)... kind of all leads to the same conclusion.

I'd love for it to be real, but internet prank videos are nearly all staged.

I've got two of those in Reno. It doesn't change the fact that LAPD isn't doing much. I live in Sheriff territory. The are a lot more proactive and a heck of a lot more reactive. Probably the best example of LAPD's lack of action occurred a short while ago. Video of a thief stealing power tools from a contractors truck included HD images of the thief, his vehicle and plate. The thief was spotted by several folks who immediately notified LAPD. Weeks later they finally got around to rounding him up. By then the contractors tools were long gone.

I imagine it would actually take them a couple of minutes to run the plate and have his address. He was living at that address. They could have nabbed him in a few hours, not weeks. Might even have gotten the guys tools back. And regardless of insurance it still cost him a bundle out of pocket to replace them.

Bummer man. How long was the 4Runner left unattended? I hope I’d notice an impact driver going in my drive way at night. Having put them on my 4Runner and Taco, the 4Runner one seems easier and quicker to get off.

    LOL... yeah yeah yeah...

And... For the record, I do regret posting a vaguely homophobic comment. I intended no offense to anyone; it was a throw-away joke because, in my heart, I'm just a troll.

And, I am sorry for contributing to the derailment of the thread, too!

I say get the anti-tamper proof bolts that fit. Most thieves would not have those in their toolbox. They want to get in and out fast. And make as little noise as possible.

Anti-tamper bolts, and you could add a 12 point lock nut on the back side which will make it harder to pull the plate. Get the safety bolts in stainless and they are difficult to drill Too much trouble and the thief will likely move on. You could grind them, but that makes noise, takes time, and will gouge the plate.

Stamp your vin into it. Wont keep it from being stolen, but when you find it on CL, you can easily show it was stolen from your truck.

I caught on video a scumbag with a bike trying all the doors of the cars parked in the driveways and on the street by my house. If the door was locked he just moved to the next vehicle. If you make it easy for a thief they will take advantage of the situation.

On my '40, I stamped the body number on the engine, rear diff, frame and a hidden gusset on the roll cage. Same with the SN for my tractor on its implements. If someone wants something, it doesnt matter if you have special bolts or switches. Stolen items need to be easily verified to be belonging to you if you find them for sale.
