Yep...this is one example of when I would use a Junk Yard. I have not looked at the RockAuto part, but some believe it's plastic and given the price they want, I'd bet it is. That will crack pretty quick. Another thing to consider is how much longer are you going to keep your 15 yr. old truck?

The OEM is plastic. Best one can tell from photos, the only non-plastic parts appear to be bolt sleeves to allow for some measure of torque -- I think the spec is 80 inch pounds.

Will look at salvage and see what I can find. Plan on keeping the truck until the floor pan or fire wall rots through -- not sure how long that will be, hoping at least 5 years.

based on the year and mileage of the truck I'd roll the dice with an aftermarket cover too, and that's from a guy that is an OEM part fanatic, the price differential for an aftermarket cover is too good of a deal compared to a $300 cost for a truck that old

Good point. I should clarify that this truck only has 105k on it. But, road salt has done a number on the floor pan and fire wall. I can buy some time with oil-like application which I will do this fall for the first time (I know, I know...).

heres the only one I found on AMAZON it has the metal sleeves in the bolt holes $101 with free shipping and free returns, has 1 positive 4 star review plus gasket, from what the ad says on it they source from a few countries sometimes you can contact the seller thru AMAZON to ask about the country of origin https://www.amazon.com/ITM-Engine-C...ehicleName=2005+Toyota+Tacoma#customerReviews

If you've been ignoring the frame the whole time too, the firewall may be a secondary issue. o_O

What you've described re the VC would have me looking for a junkyard part too. Lots and lots of 2.7s produced, should be some good low cost bits available.

Thank you. Yes, there are many options on Ebay, Rock Auto, Amazon, and the like. One thing I've noted on some (like the Amazon offering you point to) is that some offer the gasket with the cover, and those that do don't offer the plug ring gasket which could easily be ordered separately. One can also get a reasonable deal ($170-ish) for an OEM cover from Dubai or elsewhere, but my guess is it would be held up for payment of duty to the US for importation, and I'd guess that could push price up near buying OEM from a dealer. Anyway, I'll report back when I replace it with what I decided to use, whether I had problems, and the like. Thanks to everyone for their input.

I've got a jump pack, and I understand the risk I'm taking. But, I can't give up now when it cranks even in our harsh winter weather.

 smart calculated move I think, if you need to pick up the other gasket probably only a few bucks, I think u did right based on the age/miles of the truck, no way I'd pay $300 too much for that part

Should have been clearer....the Amazon cover is available for $88 at Rock Auto. Identical, and the whole gasket set is not much. But, OEM bolts for that pig are pricey, and there are a couple dozen of them. Mine are clearly rusted, and as long as I can get them out I might as well put new ones in. Do plugs while I'm in there, even though I'm a little early.

Thanks, again. Folks. Always nice to have some place to bounce ideas around before pulling the plug.

Edit: Not sure I've found the actual bolts, so could be way off on price per bolt. Hope so.

I somehow missed that the OEM price is $300!!!!!

I would look for a high quality aftermarket unit

I'd have to see if l could locate people that have used the aftermarket piece, for quality and similarity purposes. Because l wouldn't want to do the job twice with two purchased parts. One aftermarket thry one OEM.

Yep. That was my hope from this thread, to find folks who have utilized aftermarket before I became the guinea-pig. Call me guinea, though, cuz I'm going aftermarket, hoping I don't get to do the job twice.

What did you end up going with? One of the ears on my valve cover is cracked and eating as well. If I can get away with $50 on an aftermarket that would be much better than the $400 for OEM. Don't like buying things twice, though. Any update would be super appreciated
