Glucosamine and Chondroitin ~~ Any one use this?

Does it help with joint issues?

Hey there, I have used it every day for the last 8 years and I can definately tell the difference. I have been in the military for 22 years and my knees used to constantly hurt but after taking it they are alot better. Any brand is good, just read the contents.

 

I spent 20 years working on planes and the knees are starting to really bother me...

 

It will definately help you that is for sure. I know that I can tell when I dont take mine I walk like an old man.

i tore up my shoulder when i was at combat dive school, i still need surgery to fix it but after taking this stuff for almost 2 years my shoulder feels fine along w/ all my other joints

I give it to my dog with arthritis, it seems to help. Probably wouldn't hurt for me to take it as well.

 

just got some for Ollie this week and have been thinking about taking it as well. I wanted people's opinion on whether or not it actually worked or if it was a waste of $$$ One brand I saw today was $27 a bottle If it will help, then fine, but if not, I've got better things to spend my $$ on

 

Costco has pretty good prices on it, of course the bottles are huge so you need to find a brand you like before buying it there

When you start taking it give it about two weeks to work into your system and start working. As with any vitamin supplement it takes a bit for your body to start utilizing it.

 

what brand do you recommend?. I used some bought from costco for over a year and didnt feel any different so i quit. but willing to try as I am getting older and joints hurt

exactly, it's gonna be at least 2-3 weeks before you really start to notice the effects.

Here are two different opinions. I would try it just because it won't cause more damage. But personally I believe it works due to the placebo effect.

 

Try shiff from Walmart. Its about $12, but you can get buy one get one free deals on the same stuff at an inflated price for teh 'buy one' that works out to about 7-8 bucks a piece at Walgreems, Rite Aid and like drug stores. Watch the ads.

 

I know it works for me.

Also - I say nonsense on the placebo effect in this case. It works for my friend dog, who logic suggests isn't likely to fall for the notion of the 'placebo'.

My friend tried it in desperation after bringing the dog into the vet to have him put down after the dog had strugged with a bad hip for years. The dog had gotten to the point of where he could barely walk, and was in obvious pain.

The vet suggested one last chance with Gloucosamine and chondroitin. He decided what the heck, picked some up, and two weeks later teh dog was trotting around like it hadn't in years. I saw it for myself. I'll update next time i see him, but this dog had been in a steady decline for years from that hip. My assumption is that the dog was not privy to the studies prior to starting the regimen.

 

Like I said, I would give it a shot because it won't cause more damage. There have been studies involving dogs and the results have been just as vague. Here is a study which finds that liquid form of g/c is much more effective on dogs due to purity, concentration, and that it uses glucosamine Hcl instead of sulfate which comes in pill form

I am a dog owner myself and I'm glad your friend was able to enjoy his buddy for more time. But there is also an observer effect, meaning he wanted his buddy to feel better after exhausting his other options. And I'm sure he followed all the other recommendations from the vet. I put both articles so the OP can make his own conclusion while seeing two very different points of view.

 

I asked my doc about it the other day... he said some studies showed good results and others not so good.

He also said it can't hurt, but can help so I bought some today and will see if it helps

I took it for years (32 years old now) while I was a gym rat. I'd say it worked, of course I had youth on my side so who's to say for certain. I'm sure you know it helps the cartilidge (sp?) in the joints. I once heard that something like 80% of your cartilidge doesn't receive blood flow - therefore it's almost impossible for your body to repair what's damaged. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong.
