Is the nut under the truck that the bed bolt goes through welded to the frame or can I loosen the bed bolt by using an impact gun on it? The Torx head is about to strip from it being so tight that I can't break it loose that way.

I am having the same problem. I started to install more D-Rings and can't get all the bolts out. I hit them with PB Blaster and still no luck.

You have to take the bolts out, not the nuts.

Spray the bolt and nut from underneath with PB, and let soak for awhile. Then insert your torx socket into the bolt, and smack it a few times with a BFH. Hit it hard. Finally, with a breaker bar or 1/2 drive ratchet, give it quick, sudden bursts of pressure to crack the bolt loose.

Get the longest breaker bar you have or put a piece of pipe over the handle of your ratchet to extend it and give you more leverage. Use one hand to keep pressure on the head of the ratched to keep the bit from slipping out and then use your other hand to push the handle.

On a related note, has anyone has these bolts rust? The top side of my bolts, the side visible inside the bed, 3 of mine are rusted out whereas 3 are perfectly fine. Truck only has 4k miles on it and I have taken it to dealer twice and they appear to just put rust remover on bolts and it keeps coming back on the same 3.

Yeah, i think the nut is welded. I used a long breaker bar and had a buddy hold the wrench on top of the bolt so it wouldn't slip.

From my own experience, don't even fuck with those bed bolts unless you have an impact or a 2 foot cheater bar (which you will need to wack with a rubber mallet).

The bolts on the bottom are frame mounted.

I have both an impact and a 2 ft cheater bar. I bought some PB today to try but my brother needed my truck to help a friend move so now I have to wait.

Just use the impact and it won't be bad at all, long as your compressor is good sized.

i got all 4 of mine off without an impact gun or cheater bar. just the torx bit and a rachet (12" long - think) and the truck is +2yrs old.

the nut pictured above is welded to the bottom, don't worry about it.

I got all mine off with a 1" ractched, 6" extention and a fat torx. I really had to put some elbow into it, but it comes loose. The washer will come with it as it's permanently attached. If looking to put in new d hoops, you'll need to dremmel the bolt below the washer untill you can wiggle the washer off. I had 20000lb hoops but had to ream the hoop mount to fit the toyota bolt.

Once done slide on the hoop first, then the washer, slather on some blue lock tite, and tighten down. Super easy job. I can put up a pic of what the finished product looks like but i'm sure there are some floating around.

Use the impact on the torx. For real no joking. And impact is easier on the bolt than a breaker bar.

I don't have one either. At home I do but my brother stole it when I was doing my D-rings.

So i know im reviving an old thread... but i have an issue. So one of my bedbolts slides up and down in the bed. its as if the threads on the nut had worn away and the bedbolt can move freely. I can literally pull the bedbolt up through the top of the bed. The nut is still attached to the bottom of the frame mount. IF the nut is welded on what can i do? i would like to replace the nut and bolt but if the nut is welded on, then??

That makes no sense. You can move the bolt up and down but the nut is still attached to the frame. So, is the bolt moving up and down in the nut? If so, the threads on the bolt or nut or both are stripped. If that's the case, then the bolt must be freely spinning when you put a T55 torx bit on it and turn.

I suspect you are mistaken and you have the common worn bed situation with the right front bed bolt location.

standby uploading a video to youtube. hopefully it will make more sense. The bolt is moving up and down in the nut. which makes me think the nuts threads are stripped if not both bolt and nut. but the nut doesnt freely move as its welded to the frame mount.

Wow! Yeah, I'd say the threads are stripped. 1st you gotta get the bolt out. You need upward pressure on it while turning to see if you can get the threads to grab. 1st attempt would be a screwdriver, and a fulcrum to pry under the head while turning. If that doesn't work, try to have someone hammer on the end of the bolt from underneath while you turn it from above. Once you get it out, then you can assess the condition of the threads in the nut. You need a new bolt regardless. If the threads in the nut are screwed, I would drill it out and just add another nut below. There is plenty of length to the bolt. The new nut doesn't need to be welded on. That's just a convenience for removing the bed.
