Does anyone have experience running CAT5 cable throughout a house? Just interested in how hard it actually was. Eventually I want to run cat5 to 3 external cameras (front door, backdoor, driveway) and drops for livingroom all to the upstairs loft where my computer desk/router will be. This is a way in the future project.

Uughhh it can a real pain in the arse, it will depend on access along side of the house, or soffit vents, and pitch of the roof as to whether you can get to areas. If you want to go to the lower level or vise versa the only way to pass cabling then (most likely) is to install a conduit path on the exterior of the house and punch in towards said location. It is not an easy task.

Heavy downpour at our place about 6 this morning. The wind was very strong. Sounded like a tornado if I didn't know any better.

Understandable if you DIY take your time cat5 likes to roll it self up like when you hit a snake on the head for no apparent reason. Also the connectors can be a major PIA if all 8 wires are not matched up on both ends if your eyesight has faded any plus attics are to got dang hot.

I will have to think of the best approach. My thinking, if I have to power 3 external cameras, power would have to be ran to them, at that point wouldn't it be just as easy to run CAT5 that would power them as well as provide a better connection?

Are you utilizing a POE switch to power them, also, think cat 6 as a min, cat 5 is hard to come by now.

Oh. Whichever it is. Yea, i would want the POE as it just seems simpler. I haven't really done too much research just yet though. I am in the "thinking about it" phase.
