    Hey everyone,

I have a 2012 Tacoma, 4.0L, TRD Off Road, Manual transmission.

About two months ago I went to start my truck and it made a high pitch drill noise. It sounds like the gear on the starter was spinning but not engaging the flywheel. After talking with my friend he told me it was most likely the starter so I got a new one put in it. I also got a brand new battery since mine was pretty old. Still having the same problem but it’s getting worse and happening more often. We’re 99% sure it’s the flywheel but I wanted to know if anyone else has had this issue and if it could be something else. Thanks guys!

Sounds like the ring gear on the flywheel is toast:(

Id try unbolting the starter moving it over a little and see if you can inspect the ring gear thru the hole where the starter sits

Make sure to disconnect the battery before doing this

We tried to look At the ring gear when we put in the new starter. My roommate is a mechanic and he was helping me. Just wanted to see if there was any other ideas out there. Thanks guys!

Someone else had this same issue not to long ago and the flywheel was chewed up.
