Yeah....I've had the TRD for a couple of years. Painted it flat black though. Didn't like the gray with the white

My 2006’s roof paint lost it’s clear coat around 2014 and the whole roof was 50% surface rust by the end of 2017. Lost the pics I had of it but I received all kinds of comments about how awful it looked. Red rust on black looked bad.

That was also with babying it and waxing the whole truck 3-4 times a year with megiuars nxt 2.0 wax, and living in Wyoming and Idaho so no real hot environments

I was quoted over $1000 to paint professionally. Not wanting to go That route I learned a bunch about painting and stripped the roof to bare metal(not easy or fun), then applied some 2K epoxy primer out of a rattle can(Spraymax was the stuff), then some rattle cans of base coat, then Spraymax 2K clearcoat. All said and done I spent under $200 for all materials

Came out way better than expected and you can’t tell unless you really look, this is also on the roof.

still holding up great after 3 years and I’m glad I went this route.

it is some BS that the paint lasted less than 10 years on the Tacoma with regular care and wax

Nah, not a Toyota issue. UV issue. Happening everywhere it's strong and the causes the clear to fail. It' been going on forever. My house paint fails also, first on the South and Western sides.

OP has yet to mention what type of paint care if any was used on the vehicle. My bet is on little to no paint care.

Good info! Out of curiosity, are you the original owner of the truck or did it live with someone/somewhere else for X number of years? Reason I ask ties back to you mentioning how often you wax your truck and where you live, so if that was actually the case for the truck's whole life or only partially?

P.S. I'm curious if you're the same guy, but I remember a while back reading a post similar to yours where a guy mentioned that at one point when he was stripping/prepping his roof for paint he stopped and asked himself, "What the hell am I doing with my life?" I always thought that was funny and so relatable as I've found myself in that same situation plenty of times over the years working on shit...of course the end result always makes it worth it (or so I tell myself).

I agree, Toyota paint does not seem to fare well in the elements compared to other cars I have had and seen. All paint fades in the sun, but Toyota cars/trucks seem to be especially bad. If you are not too picky, I would go the rattle can route.

Toyota quality and reliability has been going downhill for years. They need to get back to basics.

Did it last past the body warranty period? Then it did it's job, at least according to Toyota.

BTW, it's the clearcoat that fails first as it's the top coat. The color *may* expedite that failure. Once the clear is gone nothing will save the basecoat from rapid decline.

A repaint is stupid expensive if you have to farm it out, and not cheap even if you DIY. And you'll get similar quality as what you had

Aircraft paint lasts much better, costs much more, and requires skills, tools and licenses most auto body shops don't have. But it is a durable option if you have 'people'.

Best bet on a truck your age in that environment is www.monstaliner.com Pick a color close to what you have so you can leave the door jambs and underhood alone and not be shockingly noticeable when opened.

yes, or boat. I've seen Awl-Grip paint jobs. Pretty tough. You can do anything yourself if willing to color sand many hours. Harder the paint, harder the sanding though.

i bought the Tacoma in 2010 with 65k on it and it lived in Wyoming. I religiously washed and waxed it until the roof began to peel.
Now it hasn’t been waxed in 3 years or so, has a dent in the bed from where a deer ran into it and is covered in pinstripes from brushy roads on hunting trips. Been maintained by the book and runs awesome with 199k. No other paint is peeling either.

I never posted on here about what am I doing with my life, but thought that exact thing while painting the roof. The prep work took awhile
