Also there’s a 97 in a local junk yard and i believe only 97.5 will swap so how do Ik if it’s 97 or 97.5?

a good parts guy at a dealer should be able to tell you and maybe even give you the part#'s if you provide them with the VIN.

None of the years overlap. Even ECU’s of the same year are compatible. Tacomas are very picky. You need to match the part number on your old ECU with a new one. Fortunately they’re never hard to find, they’re always on eBay.

How can you be sure your ECU is bad? This is very unlikely compared to other drivetrain items.

Also a “97.5” doesn’t exist. You just be thinking of 95.5.

The only way you will get the correct one.

Get the Toyota Part # on yours and Match it !!

Others might have the same plugs but the pin outs are not the same.

You could in theory sit down and wire by wire repin one to work Having the pin outs for both ECU`s

Down side is the time get one wire wrong back to the drawing board
