Anyone have any good examples of heat treating with fabrication? I'm not looking to fab anything myself, I just have a general interest. It doesn't necessarily need to be vehicle related but preferably something other than a video of someone making a knife.

There's so many variables, kind of metal, carbon content, too hard, too soft, the list goes on and on.

@Wyoming09 I apologize for the negative Nancy comment directed toward you the other day. People need criticism sometimes but other times they don't. I see it coming from you a lot and it just struck me at the time and I should have let it be because it had nothing to do with me. I am sorry for what I said and the way I said it

We have to realize a lot of the people posting their welding projects in this thread have never been to school for it and some are self taught or learned from someone they knew, myself included. I love for people to tell me how to improve upon my work, it's how it comes across as to rather I listen to them or not :D

Powdercoater brought this frame over, the guy who owns it wanted these holes filled up. Apparently someone added grease fittings at some point.

Its not really an official test. Just as you wedge the chisel between you will quickly learn where what you though was welded will just separate which shows lack of fusion. Where you got good fusion you will do nothing but bend the piece.

I went out and practiced today for a bit. I welded two pieces of 11ga together (first couple pics), then bashed one side with a hammer. It didn’t break at the weld, and just bent. So This is a step up from yesterday. I turned down the wire feed to 5, and tried to pull the puddle along the joint. Criticism welcome, always. Yes I know the weld is all over the place...

Thank you. Aside from the weld being crooked, what am I doing wrong?

Instead of testing the weld by bending perpendicular to it, bend along the joint (i.e. turn the welded plates 90 degrees and try to bend along the weld itself).

Not the most beautiful thing in the world, but it’ll do. (Paint is still wet in the picture)

    Looking much better.

Have you tried pushing the weld?

Also, vertical (up/down) welds can be tough to learn on. Try laying your work pieces flat at first. It'll make it easier to see and manipulate the puddle.

I don't think you're doing anything wrong, keep practicing is the only thing that will help. Like I said, it's not bad at all being flux core wire.

No I haven't. I read somewhere that you should pull flux welds, so that's what i've been doing. I will try pushing tonight and see how it goes
