I think he also needs the plate to be in front of the winch hawse, so it would need an extension or an L bracket

For those that are always cruising the classifieds, what are your impressions of the current used/private sale auto market?
    Where is demand at?
Asking prices seem fair or on the low side?

I would assume the demand for quality used cars (cheaper cars) would have increased since many people have lost sources of income lately and are potentially having to downsize payments.
I am seeing a lot less classifieds ads and the quality ones seem to get scooped up.
I am considering selling my 1st gen DC via private sell. However I fear getting with it if I purchase another truck first. It SHOULD be a desirable sell being a 2004 double cab TRD 4x4 with lower miles and a new frame.

I cannot get a read on the market because I am seeing similar listing that are months old without an apparent issues.

Good point. I'll look into it.
I like flipster's design, not the price tho...
Can I force piano hinge to stay open or closed, and not to flop around?

no I have an aluminum one that you can have. But you will need to make the rest of it. And it will not stay up

Thanks Dave! I'll have to look into if maybe I can put an extension into my existing stuff, because I would prefer it to stay up open when using winch

I made a quick, rudimentary illustration of how I would make a bracket. I would use the existing bracket or make a new one if the existing one did not work well. A couple 90 degree bends in some 1/8" thick aluminum flat bar (1.5 inches wide) would probably do the trick. Then mount about an 8" stainless steel piano hinge to the bracket and add the license plate to the outside of the hinge. Mount a neodymium magnet to the back of the plate(3M double sided tape would do it), and then make a small strap that can run from the magnet on the plate to the metal(?) bumper and that would hold the plate up in times you were using it. You could also use velcro and loop it around an opening in the bumper above the plate. Either would work. A little time and materials and you should be able to get out for less than $30, depending on what you have lying around the house. 7138CC3B-020C-4A2A-B9D3-8BA8E77CF26A.jpg

ohhh a double hinge. I think the one on the bottom was already hitting his hawse. Let me see if I can sketch up something similar to yours.

Thanks for looking into it, and the blueprints!!

Although, I was thinking of easier simpler way just adding extensions made of some "L" channel and moving the pivot point about 1" - 1 1/2" forward. But that's only in case guy in my shop could weld it for me.

You bet. I could fabricate one if I had your truck sitting in front of me but it will start to approach that $90 price tag if you are paying someone else for the labor. If you are handy then you can fabricate one pretty easy. Since I am not familiar with your skill level I will neither encourage or discourage your efforts. But you mentioned modifying the bracket already with welding so I am thinking you are quite capable of running with this with no problem.

man, Im modifying my friends rack. Extending it from 69" to 100" and moving a cross bar. I need to charge him more, even though its not that much welding.. we haven't discussed price.

    $90 for a little bracket?

That would work also. Depending on how much clearance you needed you could run with half inch thick aluminum bar to mount on either side of the piano hinge. That would get you a very sturdy 1 inch of clearance between the hawse and the license plate as well as giving you a sturdy chunk of aluminum to drill and tap holes that would allow for securely mounting everything up. How much clearance do you need between the hawse and the plate to allow it to pivot out of the way?

And I could be wrong, since it is hard to tell via picture only, but the original illustration I did took into account the original bracket only opening up enough to raise the plate away so that when the piano hinge was operated it allowed enough clearance for operation of the winch. The benefit being you would not need to start new and you would save a step or two in the fabrication process, assuming that would work.

Also need to consider if he has a winch hook or something else in front of the hawse

After making license plate brackets for the last three years I know I am undercharging for those as there have been increases in material and shipping costs that I have not passed on. But with educated guessing, here is what I figure:

Aluminum flat bar 1/8th inch thick locally at Home Depot will cost you about $11 for a four foot section. It is much cheaper to buy in bulk but not when you need less than 4 feet.
Probably about another $10 in stainless steel hardware. Again, much cheaper in bulk but....
The hinge will cost you about another $10-$15.
The strap, velcro or magnets, about another $5 or so.

So between $36 and $41 in parts. It should take about 2-3 hours to make. Minimum wage where I live is $12 and hour. So a minimum labor fee would be $36 but most fabricators would want to get paid much more than $12 an hour. Probably close to twice that. So now you are looking at between $72 in cost on the low end to about $113 on the high end. That does not include shipping if it were going to be shipped.

What is the hourly rate you are charging?
