Truck Cap Decisions

I was considering the Leer 100XR because on the Leer page it says that it has an insulated roof (which might be useful in the Florida heat) but looking at the picture that you posted I dont like how it hangs over the truck bed :-( I might go with the Leer 100XQ which looks more like its built for the truck. Thank you for posting the picture though, it really helps out those new truck owners that are doing research for camper tops to buy.

Man that looks pretty good, how snug does it fit on the truck bed?

 

It fits well to the bed. The shell uses a rubber bulb type gasket and the shell overhangs the bed a little. I do get water in around the tailgate, and at the seam in the front corners. Not enough to be a problem for me, but if you need a perfectly dry bed, you'll need to do some work. The installer used a black rubber putty to try and seal the corners, but it's hard to get a perfect seal.

 

Keep an eye out for used. Stole this for $400.

 

I bought the 100XR because the 100XQ windows dont slide open or open like a windoor could. It only props open on one end like 2 inches. So not much ventilation. Depends on what you will be using it for.

 

anyone know the difference between the 180, 180 XR, 180XL?

 

Only the 180 fits Tacoma according to Leer. I have the 180 with removable cab window(leaks) Windoors (tend to stick and ones leaking) I still am over all happy with it but fit and finish quality is lacking.

Does anyone know if an ARE MX series from a second gen single cab, will fit on a single cab first gen? I have a 97 4x4 with a 6 foot bed, I see an ARE mx series on Craigslist that's on a 2008. For the people that sleep in the bed with a cap...

How do you close the tailgate and the cap window from the inside and then get out?

 

I installed a rope pull to close, to open mine has a latch. Then reach down and grab the tailgate handle.

 

I was going back and forth from the Leer and Snugtop. Ended up going with the Snugtop. Got it with windoors, and roof rack for $3300. They wanted more but can be negotiated with a little.

 

After shopping around for new and used shells for a few months, I decided on the ATC CO edition. $2500 out the door with windoors, led light, and roof tracks.
The topper works great with the napier SUV tent.

 

If your buying new, why purchase a fiberglass canopy over a stainless steel or aluminum one like an RLD or Alu-Cab? They really don’t cost that much more and will hold their value so much better not to mention all the benefits that come with the design and build of either of those brands.

 

If this dealer isn't full of shit Im looking at $2k including taxes, installation and all of the options I want. RLD/Alu-Cab type caps start at $3k, add taxes and an option or two and its easily $3500+, way too much for me. But definitely a good option if I could buy it.

 

What hardware did you use there? I'd like to do this to my cap door.

 

I just used the existing latch bolt holes, some d rings and a little longer bolt. Amazon, Home Depot

 

What kind of Tent is that off the back of your tuck ? Brand/Model ?
