From my limited knowledge of reading the charts, the charts are looking bad today and are saying sell and wait for a while to buy again . Also , watching the last several days the $spx lately shows the small money buying during the day raising the averages ,then the big money selling more and dropping it down in the last 45 mins from the days highs , while raping the little guy again . Even the several large Nasdaq hero (cash parking place stocks msft, fb. goog , aapl )are being sold today also . Cash is being raised for the bargains to come when the little guy sells at the bottom again . It is a process !
Even Buffet has not seen a reason to buy anything yet ( or had to acknowledge it )while raising cash to buy or get preferred options and high interest rates for loans to destressed companies . I bet he has a list of targets though , like circling turkey vultures waiting for the right time for fresh road kill .
I watch the MACD's . Also the crossings of the 13 , 50 and 200 DMA's , bollinger bands and the RSI's , all for the short and long terms .
Long term guys ignore it all because it will go up again because the big money would not swoop in and buy the bottoms if it would not . If that does not happen at some point , we are all doomed , lol .
For fun money , it makes the game a challenge , just like any other game .

My problem with charts is they tell me what has already happened, NOT WHAT IS GOING TO HAPPEN TOMORROW.

It is not a zero-sum game though, because companies make profits, which adds to their intrinsic value. If it was all trading without value creation, then yes, that could be a problem.

You are correct but watch the charts long enough ( place a guess for the future via the chart) and realize that computers are programed to follow them and other things like keywords in the news and you may change your mind . The crossing of MDA's are real . Either the computers defend the MDA and buy , or take all info available and let it breach . This makes the MDA a resistance to the upside .

This is all true for the short-term (trading), but over the long-term, earnings is what drives stock prices.

The market is: short-term=voting machine; long-term=weighing machine.

^ Here is a good example, Walmart. I am sure moving averages, algos, all sorts of things may have made it predictable for trading, or using puts and calls. But they just keep making money, and it shows when you look back 30+ years:
