I'm about to pick up a new 2020 Taco, no dealership within a 5 hour drive range has a Cement OffRoad or Quicksand in A/T ... only 1 left is 3 hours away and is M/T ... what are the drawbacks to a M/T for an off road newb, and I take it the resale value is MUCH lower for M/Ts?

re-sale may be higher for a stick:
    - how often does an older truck die when AT goes out?
    - stick is a simple clutch replacement at worst.
    - stick is for purists who enjoy the driving experience.
    - you can roll start a stick with a dead battery or dead starter.

Edit: I got full excellent condition value KBB on a 2nd gen stick with 90k miles.

I love my 6 spd tacoma but I used to have to drive it through the city every once in a while. But offroading i love having the 6spd. I also just spent like 7k on a new transmission just to keep my truck a manual so i may be biased....lol

MT. Owned both an AT and MT 3rd gen, MT was undoubtedly more enjoyable to drive.

I have 2010 MT and the guy doing my inspection wanted to buy it off me..."You thinking of selling? This is the exact truck I'm looking for...I can't find a MT anywhere"

    I resent that. I'm a millennial with a 6MT haha

OP - you can't go wrong either way. I have to say however, the MT in this truck is one of the most fun I've ever driven. I wouldn't have pulled the trigger on the AT

edit: I drive in the city and traffic all the time too. Transmission isn't the problem, the traffic is

Well when I talk resale, I guess I mean trade value, when I trade it in ... or is it better to just pay more for the A/T? The quicksand and cement are so much better in terms of color than the others , and the others are so close I can't possibly choose between white, silver, black.. that I worry I'm going to have color pick regret like I did when I chose race red raptor in 2012... oooooof

Resale will be higher on the AT, for the same reason it will be higher on a limited vs SR5. Initial cost.

Bought my 2018 MT for 35500 traded it 20mo later for 33500.

    That's cray!

In terms of resale, I'm thinking of % return on initial cost at trade in.. like Tacos have #1 retention of value after 60 months at about 58% initial value, idk if that is BOTH MT and AT or just AT or if it's lower for MT.

seriously.......any one selling a Tacoma usually does not trade in.....

word of mouth will sell the truck....family or friend....that's my experience

I've had both an '05 Taco AT....now my '14 MT......the MT is just more fun to drive

Yes...I'm an old fart and knew how to drive a stick in 1967..a '61 Corvair to be exact

Resale.....MT is less common...sale price will be higher to someone with MT knowledge

Blue Book may deduct $1K but street price can be +$1K

OP...don't be afraid of the stick !!

Every truck sold super quick when the time came, “ Oh sweet it’s a manual “. I sell mine at about 125,000. miles.
