Hi , im a new member here. Got a 98 tacoma 4cyl 5speed 4 wheel drive with about 350000 miles. Anyway the speedometer, tach and odometer started going on and off and
finally just quit. Anybody have any experience with this and what is required to fix it?

Front dome light added, light reminder added, door chime mod, added 2nd gen 4runner headrests, grey wire mod, 2lo mod, more later.
I would start by checking the plug connections on the back of the instrument cluster, and also ground connections in this same area and the drivers side kick panel area, I believe the grounds are black/white color code, grounded to a metal surface. Hope this helps.

Actually it is my wife's truck. I recently rebuilt the front suspension, used genuine Toyota replacement parts, and got a set of 2007 TRD Tacoma sport wheels. Its amazing how a nice set of wheels can make a crappy truck look so good LOL.

I may have stumbled upon the culprit for this concern. If you can take Guage cluster out and shake it...if you hear a rattle take the trip meter out of cluster and shake it....if it is then you have your broken part. The tach....speedo....both go through the odometer. Unfortunately Toyota no longer sells just the odometer period. You have to find a replacement cluster. I hope this helps

Hi all. I created this account just to reply to this (frustrating) issue after searching the web for answers... Truck is 1998 Taco 4x4, V6, manual SR5, stock

My Odometer, Tach, and Speedometer all went dark too. I could slap the dash and it would come back for a few miles, but eventually it all died. In the thread above one guy said that if you take the instrument cluster out and you shake it, you have a broken part and you must replace the whole thing.... I'm here to tell you that if you can handle a soldering iron and super glue, you can fix this. Disassemble the dash. It's not hard. One thing I learned is that Toyota used the same screw to fasten everything! So don't get worked up with labeling everything and fretting... It's either 10mm bolt or Phillips screw... It's a simple machine. Start taking it apart until you figure out the 4 bolts to get to instrument cluster off (15 minutes if you don't stress).

Anyway, get the instrument cluster separated. Disassemble and remove the Odometer display. I think it's 2 screws and a small flat head to pry it out. If you hear that rattling the previous poster was referring too, you can fix it. It's a loose circuit board piece. I've looked online, I've called my engineering buddies, and I have no idea what component it is exactly, but it needs to be reattached. I used a magnifying glass and a small soldering iron tip and re-attached it. It's all is good now. Be precise with your welds. You can do this! It was very satisfying, I gotta say.

I uploaded a pic to illustrate. Super glue it down the solder the two connectors. Easy Peasy!

    Cheers!

Looks like an oscillator for a microcontroller - a big, old one  Nice find, and welcome to TW!
