    Hi everyone,

So after my last post about this issue in 2018, its still been doing it since and the local dealer still hasn't done anything to try to diagnose it after many requests.

The issue is that when in 4lo/1st, the rpms climb and wont hold the truck back when going down a hill. Everything turned off (heat, ac etc.) No foot on gas or brakes. Works perfectly fine in 4lo/reverse down hill and stays at 1200.

Are any of your tacomas a/t or m/t doing this and has anyone got it fixed?

You put it in S1, meaning it will stay in first gear... of course the rpms are going to go up?? o_O

If you are letting the truck freely roll down a hill in 4lo, you should expect the rpms to climb as the vehicle speed increase.

I think he's hoping for more engine braking.

Are you wanting the truck to hold itself stationary on a hill on its own? If you dont apply the brakes, gravity will do its thing.

It doesn’t have a “granny gear” like some of the older 4x4 pickups, and if you add larger tires, the engine braking will be reduced. Also give it a few seconds for the ECU to shut the fuel to the cylinders off and the decent will slow a bit. It will alternate between off and on and you’ll find what speed range it will keep it at w/o throttle.

Could just be stock gearing. With the stock short gear, the truck shouldn’t be able to hold steady going downhill. Then once it gets to a certain rpm the engine applies engine braking to get you back down to a lower rpm.

This is the kind of shit that drove me nuts working at dealerships. People come in tell you about a “problem”. There is no problem or you can’t duplicate it. You tell them in order to fix a problem you have to replicate it. They get all pissed off. Scream at you, or rant online or whatever. If only half you people knew what they have to deal with on a daily basis you’d understand some why things are the way they are.

OP are you referring to DFCO, deceleration fuel cutoff? it kills the engine braking around 1200rpm and let's you loose, and can be an issue going downhill off the gas.

I have noticed that it takes a few seconds for it to cut fuel and start engine braking when coasting in low gear. I just assumed it was intentional.

So OP is not new to 4x4s, got it

This is probably what he is experiencing, I noticed it too, but figured it was a quark of the 3.5L. Wonder if it has something to do with the multi-port and direct fuel injection system :notsure:
