Preventing hail damage

When we're home and have early enough warning for potential hail, I have access to covered parking. But when we're out on the road with no cover available I was thinking a standard truck cover with some 1" or so foam panels underneath. Would this be enough or will I just be SOL?

 

last time it happened here I threw a heavy blanket on the roof & hood with a plastic cover on top and had zero damage.

If I had nothing, I'd head for some thick trees or an overpass...something to hide under.

 

Get a car cover and put a cheap full or queen size memory foam bed topper over the hood and roof. Maybe have a local upholstery shop sew it in somehow.

For Texas sized hail, you better bring out the big guns.....

I have to park outside and have been dealing with hail a few times a year.

What I ended up doing was getting a cheap car cover ( Amazon.com/gp/product/B01GVXSQ7S/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1 ) Then I went to home depot and grabbed 12 moving blankets. When there is word of hail in the weather, I go out and cover the truck with 2 layers of moving blankets, then I put the car cover over all of that. The cover has straps that go under the truck to keep it on in the wind. This has worked really well for me. I do plan to make something a little stronger out of pool noodles and my roof rack.

 

That’s what insurance is for...why go out to cover the truck only to be clocked in the head with a hail stone!

 

Because some people would rather prevent hail damage than have to deal with a insurance claim and deductible. Usually the weather report will say "chance of hail" or "there will be hail" so you get some warning.

Just because you have health insurance doesnt mean you should be going around licking corona patients.

A friend got his truck hit with hail, dentless repair in a couple days. $5 K in damages. Insurance covered it.

 

Not too bad, hail damage is preventible, so is corona. If you protect yourself you probably wont get corona, if you protect your truck, you probably wont get hail damage.

Its a stretch yes, but you get the idea. Insurance should not be used for preventible things. Try to prevent the thing, if you cant prevent it then you can use insurance. Either way you save money on bills by preventing it.

 

Having once owned a new car that got hail Damage with only 1200 miles on it I can say even with great insurance it sucked. Imagine having your roof panel cut out, replaced, repainted, Interior reinstalled, and having all that show up n a Carfax when you sell or trade in. Assuming the repair is perfect, paint matches, and nothing is wrong. I kept the check and never fixed mine as it was kinda minor and the Carfax Curse is something to avoid. But feel free to deal with this, I will avoid it if I can with some furniture pads I always have with me.

 

Moving blankets work pretty well if you want to cover the truck real quick.

 

I’d love to see some jackass running outside during golf ball or larger sized hail trying to cover their vehicle up. Maybe I’d run out to help someone out of the storm, but I’m not gonna sweat it if my truck takes a beating.

 

If the hail starts you let it go for your own safety, but generally you get notice of a incoming storm. My phone goes off, we have sirens that go off and usually you can see the storm coming. If it looks bad, I check the weather and put the covers on before it starts.

 

Sure it is, that’s why it’s called risk transference.
