Even restricted to on road, I think optimal air pressure is subjective and also has a large margin of error. As long as you stay within some safety bounds, you'll be fine. Within those bounds, it's a personal balancing act between cushion, rolling resistance, traction, and durability. This is just my semi-informed random guy on the internet opinion.

One thing I don't like about the chalk test is that it seems to be concerned only with durability (uneven wear) as if cushion, rolling resistance and traction don't matter.

No No No No No No, please no! This chalk recommendation really needs to go away. There is nothing scientific about putting chalk on your tires. You get zero information from doing this and it really just makes a mess. The only tires that you could do this with were bias ply tires and even those you really couldn't get much value from that.

The only real way of determining tire pressure is to measure the temperature across the tread. The math will get you close, but you will notice that in every race series, the first thing they do is take the temperature of the tires. However, there is a big difference between having the data and knowing what to do with it.

The easiest way is to keep above what your placard has and below the maximum on the tire. Somewhere in between is your happy place.

So like @splitbolt said, my 30 psi E load tires=21 psi P metric tire. So, shoudnt my tires look a bit low?

You mean to tell me that you measure the temp of each individual tread block on your tires to determine your tire pressure? The chalk test has been used for YEARS and helps with even tire wear, even in modern day tires. So yes yes yes yes!

Let me see if I can help...

    These are the OEM tires...
    t.jpg
If we go to the charts we see they have an inflated load of 2,149-2,172 lbs.
    t1.jpg
    t2.jpg
    t3.jpg
How we get from 2,149 to 1,954 lbs...page 11 of the Toyo PDF.
    2,149/1.1=1,954
    t4.jpg

    This is your tire...
    From 40-45 psi it's 1,870-2,030.
A 5 psi difference is equal to a 160 lb difference.
Or, a 1 psi difference is equal to 32 lb difference.
    So, 40 psi(1,870) + 3psi(96) = 43 psi(1,966)

maybe mine look "low" bc they are 16" wheel with more sidewall? I dunno but your tires definitely don't look low.

I've always run around 32-34 in the rear and 34-36 in the fronts on all of my trucks that have E rated tires. Even wear across all tread blocks!

OK that makes sense. So I was already darn close at 42 lbs the other day. 44 lbs would put me over the 2030 range on the chart you referenced. I was wondering where and why the 1966 came from. Thank you for taking the time!

    Looks can be decieving...

Measure from the top of wheel to top of tire.
Measure from bottom of wheel to the ground.
    Compare.

Measure from ground to top of tire.
Measure left to right across the tire.
    Compare.

I know, thats why i never really put in a lot of thought in it. Never had issues with wear, noise, traction etc. But @splitbolt has me wondering now...

At the risk of stating the obvious and/or insulting someone’s intelligence, I wish to state that radial car tires looking a bit “flat” is perfectly normal. A pneumatic tire is part of the car’s suspension. It needs to flex a bit to save your teeth from being jarred loose.

When I measure my tires they are nowhere near the 31.7" that claims to be which also has me perplexed. I measure from ground to top of tire and it looks closer to 30.

I was more interested in knowing if I'm improperly running my tires at 40 to 43 psi.
