Back when I used to be strong, there was a few times guys would basically pull up benches to watch me squat...lol. The funniest was when I would go to incline bench (which was always my best lift) and I would get my spouse to spot me..the look of terror in random people's eyes as this slip of a woman stood behind me to spot my sets. She was the best spotter in the whole place though...

Now people look and you can almost hear them thinking "I thought he'd be stronger"

    @Travish325 @Kerleyfries

Ok, let me give you a little background. I'm 40yrs old and have been lifting since highschool. I'm 6'3 and currently 205lbs. I've been up to 240lbs in my late 20s while I was powerlifting. Up until about 5yrs ago when I started really learning about nutrition and implementing IF, I was always around 220.

I've slowly worked my way down from 220 to 205, my strength has improved a bit in that time but my main focus now is mobility and flexibility, I no longer care about trying to be the strongest guy in the room because really what's all that strength if you aren't mobile and flexible.

Ive tried all the different lifting strategies and all the different diets and supplements. I have never used any type of steroid or growth hormone.

I don't have a misconception on single digit bf. As I stated before, that picture was pre workout + 20hr fast. At that time I had burned through all glycogen in the muscles and running was off ketones. If you really want I can post a pic post workout post carb reload and you'll see all types of veins.

If you still think I'm talking out my ass check this link

This is my nutrition coach I meet with a couple times a year. Check his credentials

    Your ink got darker!

    ;)

For folks who IF...do you work out am and, if so, do you break your fast PWO per the Leangains protocol? My issue was always I hate breakfast so I'd rather have my eating window during dinner hours. I have changed to once a week 24hr fasts (when not in lockdown...it's been too hard to do sheltering in place)

You do IF but just out of curiosity do you do any carb restriction?

I respect Mark Sisson but I’m not a fan of leangains. I think he emphasizes protein excessively and leads people down a very dangerous path with how horribly low fat his diet recommendations are. So I don’t follow leangains.

I typically eat 1-7 most days, weekends I’ll frequently do OMAD. I like to eat at night.

I do my best to schedule all high intensity work for the PM within my feeding window. I reserve LISS for the AM when I’m fasted.

Yes, I've played around with carb restriction, went full keto for about a year. I found that I function better with a balanced carb protein intake. It's really about learning what works best for you

I workout am and pm. Am is usually just a light warm up with mobility exercises and stretching and pm is strength training. I like to take advantage of the up tick in hgh and testosterone your body releases after about 14-16hrs. I encourage people to listen to they're body, make a food journal and find what works best for you

I did keto for several months last year. I was training for an ultramarathon and trying to balance as much running and lifting as I could. Because it was ultra training I was just focused on aerobic running.
I felt like a fucking beast on keto. Almost super human.

I’m transitioning into road marathon training so need the carbs now. I’m almost bummed. I love being in ketosis lol

True but have you ever been or tried to get 10% or less? I used think the same way back when I didn't have my nutrition figured out. It takes a hell of a lot of discipline and focus to get under 10%. I have a lot of respect for people who can maintain 10 or less. It's one thing to get that low for a show or something or taking pics post workout with a pump. I never take pics post workout because that's not real, the pic I posted is what I look like always, I've been maintaining that for a few years now. But don't get me wrong I still respect guys going for power and strength because I was there at one point, as I get older my goals and priorities change. One thing I can say for sure is a lot of guys need to start learning about mobility and flexibility because in the long run that's most important

That's great man! Yeah I liked the superhuman feeling too, along with the laser focus from fasting but I like pizza and cookies more lol

Thats another thing I miss the insane focus and mental clarity.

The only carb I suffer without is beer. In all honesty I can take or leave the rest.

Post rotator cuff surgery I was on a mission to power lift just so I wasn’t like all the other guys I knew with rotator cuff injuries who whined about all the shit they couldn’t do anymore. I got to 180ish (probably over, I’m still in denial) and was starting to get pretty strong (not lighting the world on fire but strong for me).

I was playing around with my nephew one day who challenged me to a 400m race. I was a decent long distance runner in the past so took up the challenge. I was a marathoner, I could smoke this kid.

    I fucking couldn’t breathe.

Lifting heavy is fun, but when I feel like I can’t function doing other things I enjoy its not worth it.

For me, being lighter, leaner and able to do endurance sports and fun outdoor activities is more important. I’ve also since had other surgeries and I just do better being lighter and more flexible. I’m 29 today. I really don’t need to feel older than I already do LOL. I’m with you on ROM and flexibility.

Its all what you enjoy out of life. Different body types lend themselves to different lifestyles.

Agreed!! That's another big focus, injury prevention. I've been lucky to not have any major injuries. Ive tried to learn from others horror stories. I did recently finally get over this hip pain I was having for over a year. It was a constant dull pain in my left hip with occasional sciatica symptoms. Doctor did x-rays and MRI and found impingement in my left hip joint, they wanted to do surgery but after a lot of research I found that I had really tight psoas and ql and weak glutes and core. So after a lot of trial and error on workouts and mobility I finally got over it
