I finally put 285’s on and want to know if I need to change my spare tire, and if so what will fit that would work solely as a spare. Someone told me 33’s but I heard that won’t fit underneath my 2nd gen. Thanks in advance.

It needs to be the same diameter as your other four tires. If it is not, you will break something if you try to drive with an odd one out.

Will a 285 fit? And can I just buy the most inexpensive tire in that size (street tire) or does it also need to be a KO2 since street and all terrains vary in sizes although they are both 285?

I am not sure if about fitment. I have a 3rd gen and 285s fit, but I have to bend a couple of tabs and the rubber touches the hangers so I just don't have it under there, but many people have done it. Again that is on a 3rd gen.
You just have to buy a tire with the same diameter so you have to look into that on whatever spare you are planning to get. In my opinion, just go to a tire shop that sells KO2 and see if they have a used one that you can buy that most people take off when they get fresh ones. That will suffice as a spare without having to buy a brand new tire that you may or may not rotate in.

The issue with size is more about diameter than width but but have an effect. https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/maximum-spare-tire-size.236137/ I have 265-75-16 (1" larger than stock) and it fits no problem.

Personally, I like my spare to match my others but it's not necessary in all situations. If your truck is more of an around town, on road kinda vehicle then pretty much any tire of the right size should be sufficient. All ya gotta do is get home safely and to a tire shop. However, if you're doing a lot of off-roading I would not want an old, generic all season road tire as my spare. If you get a flat while out in the boonies off roading it's likely you got that flat because of the type of terrain. Now, imagine putting on a regular tire and trying to get home with that. It's that scenario that makes it worth it to me to spend the extra $150-200 to get matching spare. Better safe than sorry.

Thanks, this is what I was thinking. I hardly go off-roading but I plan to... but I’ve always planned to (since 08) and never really have done anything long or difficult. It’s not my daily but I like driving it more than my car so I drive it as often as I can.
Pretty sure I’ll just go with an inexpensive used 265/75/16 as my spare. I only have the stock jack so I don’t plan on doing any hard off-roading.
