If your just city driving and no camping/off roading or towing then 4 cylinder maybe ok? Maybe? Just keep in mind resale is lower. I recently bought an sr5 2013 with 65K miles lifted and 4 wd for 17,500. I searched for 3 months and had to drive 300 miles to pick it up!

You are an awesome woman and wife. Your husband is a lucky guy. For me however I’d rather pick out a truck myself. That just the way I am. Now if my wife got me a Corvette I’d be one mega happy dude.

    2014 by a mile.

Curious what the colors are though. Sorry if I missed that somewhere in the thread.

LOL! I didn't snag his credit card.

To be fair: He had already picked out the make/model/etc himself. What is happening is that we agreed on getting a 'new' car to replace the old minivan (23 years, 210,000 miles). We had about 9,000 saved up for it but his hopes of getting the 2nd gen toyota with anything remotely resembling low miles just didn't fit into a 9,000 budget. We thought it would have to be another minivan. In the meantime, we had also been saving for a bathroom refresh (which it needs pretty badly, think 1950s and half demolished) ... but then with the shut downs, suddenly these cars have dropped JUST into range... So between the 'car' fund and the 'bathroom' fund we now can make one of these work. I can live with the awful bathroom for a few more years. :D

It IS less like a gift I suppose since we share money... but it's an UGLY bathroom. LOL.

So what I want to do is get it all lined up at the dealer, so we can go in and look at a cheap minivan, he'll be very excited about the Tacoma we casually see... go for a test drive but he knows we can't afford it... then I can whip out the paperwork for him to sign for title. If he doesn't like it, he'll never have to know my maneuverings. :p

IMO getting a daily driver down the road is just more reason to opt for the V6 :) But really it depends on what he needs out of the truck. Personally, I needed 4WD, as much space as I could get and power. It's used for hauling and camping trips, not daily driving, so I'm not too concerned about the mpg (although it does SUCK). Based on my requirements and budget I had to buy something older with higher miles.

I'd skip the wrap. A properly done wrap will cost you thousands and at that point you might as well get the color you want in the first place. And remember, they don't last forever. After a few years you'll need to have it removed. Everyone's results will vary based on the quality of the product as well as how well it's maintained but it should be considered temporary. And it may also cost a pretty penny to remove (if it's old and brittle a lot of places don't even want to deal with wrap removal). The good part about a wrap is that it will protect your original paint from the sun and from light scratches. There are pros and cons but IMO wraps don't really fit most people's needs. Personally I'd be stoked on white, if I had it my way all my vehicles would be white :)

Just my opinion but I’d go back a few more years and take a few more miles to get into a 6 cylinder TRD off-road or Sport in double cab. I bought a new 06 base but owning the baby taco made me want the upper end taco models. I’m thinking everything’s going to get cheaper with folks out of work.

Like Muddinfun has mentioned, it makes a huge difference in pricing on the model. If it's a base model 4cyl that's 5 lug, that pricing isn't much of a deal. Keep in mind that if it is a 5-lug model, it will be very limited in upgrades especially if your husband wants to lift it. It is very sweet of you to surprise him with a Tacoma but you don't want to buy a model that you both will regret owning. Let him check and test drive both along with posting pics here if we can assist with your decision. Personally, if he plans on using his truck for hauling and eventually lifting it, a tacoma with a V6 and 6 lug is preferred.

I’m just messing with you! That’s a pretty cool thing of you to do. He’s a lucky guy.

One recommendation for you. Not sure exactly where you or the trucks are located or came from. Just be sure to take a look at the frame or have someone to do it. That’s the only real thing that can make either of these trucks a bad purchase.

Sounds like 2014 for the win, with the caveat that I should make sure he can bow out gracefully if it's not the dream. I'll make sure that's possible. :D :D :D Thanks so much!

5 lug 4 cylinders have their place. They putter around town and get better gas mileage. They're great for hauling a few 2x4s, a couple bags of concrete and a sheet of plywood. You don't look as cool driving them, but you're saving money at the pump. If pulling a trailer, going camping, hauling more weight, etc. are intended uses, better to step up to at least a 6 lug V6 prerunner. If snow, ice, and mud are in your future, step up even further to a 4WD.

2014 is my vote, but if you could find a 4wd, it's a game changer.

you can lead them to water but you can’t make them drink. I’ve owned three 4 cylinder Toyota trucks an 86 a 99 and a 2006. They were ok but limited in use, ok for commuters and light use. Then I got an 06 Pre Runner SR5 access cab w/ 6 cylinder. I never looked back.

She seems to be influenced by a price range and getting newest model year. That equals cheap base model. Nobody could have influenced my decision to buy cheap either, so be it. Good luck

I think we're all missing the point. He's driving a minivan. Engine displacement does not matter at this point. Get the man a Toyota Tacoma stat.
