My wife and I have an understanding. She understands that she married a good guy who happens to be an asshole. I understand that it's easier just to nod my head and say "You're right babe. I must be wrong". lol

Well you know if you end up right about something there's 100% chance she's forgotten what you predicted...and now you're just being a jerk....because "There's no way I would forget us discussing that"....

One important note about your 401K is it may have a match (mine is 25%) and it's tax free...So if you're a 17-22% tax bracket $100 is already a 22% return...and then the 25% match it's a 47% return...So it should be your first and foremost retirement option...The money I'm toying around with here is my play cash...Bonuses from work that aren't in my budget, Trump checks...things like that...I've thrown every bonus for about 7 years into my stock account and up until 2 months ago it was about 3x the amount...now it's about 1.5...still beats cash in an account.

    I still don’t see a problem here.

geeze. I’m happy at half up to 8 percent of my contributions (so 4 percent match). I should find a job somewhere else :D

Oh yea, there's a limit of 10% and right now the match is halted for Corona reasons...So I upped my withholding another 2% ..My dad worked at a place where they did 50% match, UNLIMITED...So for his last 10 year from retirement he maxed out $14K, and they matched 50% of maxed out, and he had the 50+ catch up contribution of $5K...So he's putting in 19K and they're adding on 8K...so 27K a year and in that 10 years with a good market just THAT 401K 2006 to 20016 the DOW went from 10K to 18K and he was close to $750K...on just that!!! It gives a guy hope...

LOL. Yeah, there's not a lot of places that match like that or do pensions anymore. Some of the people in my building have pensions still (not collecting yet, obviously). One guy was actually with the company for something like 30 years, left for greener pastures, came back about 18 months later (maybe less) because it wasn't actually much greener (many, many reasons why he came back, not making fun of any of them). So he screwed himself. He had 5 weeks vacation and a solid pension. Now he's back on 2 weeks vacation (reset the clock when he left and came back, so now his tenure is like 2 years), and on our retirement plan, so his pension locked in when he left and now he's in a 401k plan. Our 401k plan isn't bad by any means, just an industry standard match (4-5%).

My wife's first job out of college was for a small construction firm in Santa Cruz. They matched 100%. She maxed out for the 5 years she worked there. She hasn't touched that money in 11 years. She did it right and will get the full benefit. I fucked off until I realized, at 37, I had zero saved for retirement. I've done pretty damn well managing my own IRA the last 7 years. Now it's a race to see if my trading can catch up to her nest egg. lol

My mom worked AFL-CIO for 40 years, and took a buyout. She had stock options for 30 years buying stock with like $50 every paycheck...Well THAT added up...Holy crap...I'm pretty sure they are the last generation of "Retiring Millionaires" with savings, assets, investments etc...The next gen on will be eaten alive by medical coverage, student loans, home prices...Their house was $30K in 1972...and is worth like $500K now...I can't see the house I bought for $300K being worth $4.5M when I retire...The math doesn't work..

You talking 401k programs specifically, or are you predicting another market slump?
Yeah, I think that those days are probably behind us. Things in general are much more expensive, and growth on housing will flatten out considerably IMO. I don't ever plan on getting house-rich because I am behind the curve. My 200k house will NEVER be worth 600k. Just the sad reality. At least not in my lifetime.

My grandparents both had pensions, large IRAs, and my grandfather bought GE stock every payday for 30 years. My grandmother always told me that my grandfather was so cheap they didn't go on any vacation until they retired, saving every extra penny for retirement. She left everything to my father who burned through it in two years to the point where he couldn't afford a new roof. He's gone now and it's sickening to finally see the numbers and how quickly everything they worked for disappeared.

Same with my grandmother. She worked for P & G for 40 years from 1960 -2000. She bought stock every paycheck at half the cost since she was employee. She was only a secretary and had retired a millionaire. Those days are long over for the future generations.
