VIDEO: Bad carrier bearing?

I made a couple of quick videos showing the carrier bearing and rear mount. Looks like I need the TSB fix for this model, as I'm pretty sure the mount is moving waaaaayy too much. I think the movement has ruined my carrier bearing as well...I think that's it I hear squeaking. Let me know what you think...

That squeak sounds like a u-joint or the carrier bearing. I would jack the rear up and rotate the shaft, then use a mechanic's stethoscope to pinpoint the noise. The carrier bearing should flex under load.
Make sure you use jack stands on the frame, not the axle. Chock the front tires good too.
Be carefull, and don't work alone on this one.

 

I forgot to add; check the rubber on the bearing mount for cracks and rotten spots. If it has them, replace it.

 

So does it appear there is too much movement at in the driveline?

 

i am getting a squeaking/chirping noise when i let off the gas. I know it isnt coming from my suspensions; i shake the shit out of my truck when its parked and its absolutely silent. only when i am easing off the gas do i hear it.

did yours gradually get worse and was it always that loud when accelerating?

 

I tihnk that if you try to load up the drive line like that (I can't tell how fast you are going but I can hear the high revs and see that you are are starting from a full stop)...You are going to get a LOT of motion out of the driveline.
Tho I would agree....It sounds like you might have a carrier bearing or U joint that needs some attention.

 

I've only owned the truck for a short period of time, so I don't really have any idea how long it's been doing it. It only does it when I accelerate, and it appears that it's doing it worse when it's cold.

 

When I've had carrier bearings bad in cars I've driven had chattering/shaking at certain speeds. Not that you have to wait that long.. Its probably a 50-100 dollar part.. and an easy change if you're worried. Inspect it, shake it, check the rear end maybe for broken ring or spider teeth, that'll make noise but not necessarily bind, just roar and get worse at certain speeds.

If you can't find it, maybe let it fester for a while, if you're the type that can stand it. I can't. But it'll get more obvious if you're not imagining it.

U joints and bad bearings should give you some play if they're bad enough to change immediately. If you jack the truck you can even usually feel loose bearings in the wheels if you shake back and forth.

 

Thanks for the info island. The vibration is really pretty bad...and since there is a TSB for a vibration problem, I just automatically assumed it must be the rear mount. I suppose if a u-joint was going out it might have the same type symptoms. There doesn't seem to be any roaring noise, just a lot of vibration.
