The impossible nut

I can't get the last (top) 1 of 3 nuts that holds my front coilover in place. I have sprayed tons of wd-40, every 14mm socket, wrench, channel locks, vice grips, monkey wrench...its a bit rounded at this point. FUCK!

Any suggestions?

 

Propane torch and heat the nut.

Then twist on it.

 

If your replacing strut mounts just cut it off. If your not replacing it I would take a wire brush on a drill and clean up those threads as much as possible, less resistance once it starts moving, and heat up the nut with a torch, heat makes metal expand, you only want the nut to expand so dont heat up thr stud much, it'll happen some but focus on the nut with the torch

 

If it comes to that and must, I will. Going to Lowes for a propane torch and grip tite socket in the morning. If I must cut, do you think a sawzall will suffice? And if so, can I get the same bolt from the hardware store or do i need to buy one from the dealer?

 

I'd replace with Grade8. Available at Home depot, Ace etc.

 

Try a 6 point socket instead of 12. Makes a big difference.

 

I tried this position, but my gf was not into it.

 

My top hat nuts looked a lot like that, I had to cut a lot of hardware when I did my front suspension. I wasn't able to cut those nuts with a recip, it was too big of a tool for a tight spot. I used a dremel with a flexible extension and a cutting wheel to take at least one or two of those off.

I think you still have a chance of getting that off without cutting though. Hit it with penetrating oil, heat with a torch til it's 200F+, then go to town with a breaker bar and 6 point impact socket.

A tool called a bolt extractor would probably work. Home Depot and Harbor Freight have them. They are sockets that grip rounded off bolt heads.

 

Smaller socket. Hammer that shit on and back it off with a break over bar. I’ve done it a ton of times on older cars. Just get ready to buy a new socket

 

Looks a lot like my old 4Runner when I was installing my lift. I had a nut that would not come off. I took a grinder to cut it off then wire wheeled it clean and spray painted it. I got a new top hat set at autozone and rented the coil compressor and got everything swapped in an afternoon.

 

WD-40 is not a penetrating oil. Quit wasting time with that and try PB Blaster or Kroil.

 

I know it is a bit expensive but I bought one to use at work.
I work on diesel engines in semi's. Got tired of exhaust nuts etc that won't come
off. Works awesome. Saves a lot of time from not needing to try and extract
broken studs in heads etc. sometimes it is not feasible to use a torch.

All six of mine broke loose and just spun cut off wheel to the rescue .

In my case the nuts had little rust .

 

Ive had good luck with harbor freight extractor sockets

 

Ohh the snap on guy has those on the truck and they are fucking awesome.
