I use to install fm converters for am only cars.

 

I remember those. I think l remember seeing them advertised in Car Craft magazine.

I remember installing an am/fm/cassette in place of the stock am radio in my 76 Camara, and wired up a couple 6 x 9's.

Great Times !!!!

 

They were the good old days. My first install was a under dash 8 track no front speakers but 6 x 9in the back and Firestone wide O ovals 69 really sport Camaro was a real bad ass or so I thought

Well, being 37 now.

When I was 17, first car, I replaced the cassette player with a CD player and six disk changer (oh boy, that was hot back then), Infinity Reference speakers all around, and sat like that for a year. Then came the subs, 2 10” Rockford Fosgate subs in sealed boxes. Then I get the wild idea to drill holes in the boxes and port them (knowing NOTHING about enclosure design and box tuning) and had the gain cranked up so high I smoked a set of subs every six months.

Next system was in a Miata, head unit with Bluetooth (oh Mama) Alpine door speakers, and aftermarket Miata specific headrest speakers.

Then my 94 Toyota pickup, just a head unit and speakers.

Then my Mazda 3. Kenwood Excelon, built in EQ and crossovers, four channel JL, Infinity components, Sundown SA12 in a custom designed ported enclosure (this was when I finally learned about enclosure design and proper amp tuning, and time alignment, and how to tune EQ’s). Sounded amazing, could play classical music wide open crystal clear, or punch out 140db bass racing. It was the best system I ever built, but when the car hit 238,000 miles it came out.

 

So, while a simple speaker replacement has helped, every time I drive for more than five minutes I compare it to what I’ve built in the past and I start wondering what some real power, and the signal processor to give me the control, could manage.

 

I used to compete in the 300w and under, sound quality class. 1992 VW Golf. 4-channel Rockford Fosgate amp, Blaupunkt head unit and 10-disk changer, Alpine EQ, MB Quart mids with titanium dome tweeters. For a sub, Kicker 12” in a 4th order bandpass enclosure tuned to 30Hz, with a rollover at 110Hz. Had access to a mic and oscilloscope to set my EQ. Won a couple local events, got a 5th at a West Coast National event. 126db was something back then with so little power.

 

Never understood the object of contest is to make someone’s ears bleed. Lol

Actually pulled the boat out of the garage and covered it and put the 3 cars and bike inside.
The boat is the sacrificial lamb for hail...

Now to start drying stuff out and reorganize...

 

Had a gust front and hour of torrential downpouring in Windham. My poor chickens were running for their lives.
My neighbor is out trying to salvage his grass seed that he just planted two days ago, Im scared to go see the carnage in my newly planted vegetable garden..

We were under a tornado watch most of the afternoon and evening. Sky got dark a couple of times, but nothing really happened.

 

I've installed plenty of audio equipment over the years in my own vehicles and friends. But never anything too heavy....head units, speakers, the occasional amp.

 

Yeah, I just did it to have some tunes whole cruising. Not to blow out ear drums. l spent the rest of my money on Aluminum intakes, Moroso valve covers, air cleaners, 650 vac secondary holley, Accel coil, and some cragars wrapped in some wider tires!

 

Ha....you must have grown up in the 70s and 80s

 

I certainly remember the Am Jam...as we called them back then. Usually one speaker in the middle of the dash.

My grandfather father was a truck driver for Jim Beam for 30+ years. My grandmother wanted to be able to listen to her "trucker music" 8 tracks in the car. He went down to Western Auto and bought an under the dash 8 track player and installed it....cussing the whole time about being on his back. He was in his 70s at the time. So it probably did suck.

My dad was a die hard talk radio guy. So even when FM became prevalent...he never had it on in the car.

 

Got my drivers licence in 82 when l turned 16. Loved cars right off the bat. Played around with them for years. First car was a 73 Buick Century. Quickly followed by my first 69 Grand Prix with a 428 and a Turbo 400. Rebuilt the heads in Auto shop when l was 17.
