I work at a pet store when I was younger for about 2 years there was a tarantula there that i held and did not have any issues.

Have any of you ever gotten bit or do you hold your tarantulas at all?

Just being defensive; have to remember that anything its size and bigger is a predator out in the wild; it's life or death.

Some species will generally be more "flight" vs "bite" but that could change as tarantulas adopt their own personality as they mature.

@boogie3478 OBT and my OBT at the same age can have varying personalities where one is much calmer than the other, even though the species itself is known to be very defensive and will strike without a threat pose even.

It's not encouraged at all to handle tarantulas.

They do not get used to you, they will not recognize you, no benefit at all.

I did handle my avic once but that's when I was rehousing it. Only did so because the species is known to be extremely calm in nature.

Tarantulas are altogether a different kind of pet.

You don't pet it, you don't interact with it, you don't do anything you would like any other pet.

You just provide it an enclosure that suits its needs; provide fresh water, and just let it be.

Don't bother it, don't try to get it to come out or react in any way as it'll just stress it out.

Really it's just a display piece and that's it.

The fun is owning it for awhile and watching it transition from a dull colored sling to a beautiful mature male or female.

What's even more fun is feeding time, and they're reaction to food when you drop live bugs in its enclosure to devour.

Then there's the challenge of rehousing which by itself, I enjoy.

If what I said above works for you, then you'll be a happy tarantula owner.

Well just using a good substrate mix can prevent mold, and as long as you can remove whatever carcass is left or molts, you don't normally have to clean anything.

You'll end up rehousing a tarantula before it needs its enclosure gone through.

    @TXpro4X4

I'm still learning as I go, I just happen to read a lot and retain knowledge.

@boogie3478 will chime in with much better advise.

Just like with any other hobby, there is a ton of information out there so just ask questions here. Plenty of pet stores give terrible advice that can easily get your tarantula killed. The biggest 2 of these that they are infamous for recommending is using a heat lamp/heat mat for your T ... and using a wet sponge in a water dish instead of just water.

I guess some people think that since some Ts are from really tropical areas that they need alot of heat .... that's a good way to kill your spider though. Humidity is key and room temperature is fine for Ts.

I let my friend's tarantula crawl on my arm, apparently it was a mellow species. It was big and black.
