Well any additional or new fee is likely to generate heated discussion in some places. I'm just surprised there's not more of it, but again I don't know how widespread the impact is. There were people upset when the OHV sticker was required for full-size vehicles on certain trails. Every time a specific FS or BLM or whatever location talks about adding a fee, or other places that have them talk about increasing the fees there's generally a lot of pushback (Rocky's last fee increase for example was significantly reduced after the outcry). There's usually some support too, but even here there's been a lot of 'fuck you FS' when they talk about fees in certain places. And I actually am aware that hunting/fishing fees go to more than just those activities in this state. I may not know all of the details or specific examples, but that's long been a point made in these discussions by both sides - the hunters 'subsidizing' other outdoor stuff, including wheeling.

Good additional article/opinion column. It does emphasize the 'I paid you didn't' issue for hunters/fishers that was talked about in the article I posted when they were debating the problem and what to do about it in the board meeting, and makes it clearer the funding sources for different agencies. Which quite frankly I think is bullshit - resources for the use and enjoyment of everyone (or protection for) should be general taxes in large part, not specific user fees, but that's a whole other discussion. Beyond again, it just seems like getting nickeled and dimed more and more to spend time in the outdoors with all the different passes and permits (and yes, I know there are plenty of places still free to go... for how long?).

Skaguay is a good example I wouldn't have thought of. I've heard of the power plant and how it is a popular hike, thought about doing it some day. Didn't know it was an SWA. Didn't know about Pubelo Reservoir, but that seems like a very similar situation as we have here in Fort Collins in that there's a state park near a... 'significant' city so a lot of potential users. Bellevue probably doesn't see nearly as many, but there are quite a few that go just to walk along the river or have a picnic, not to fish. It also, with that split agency, highlights the issue pointed out in the article you linked which I hadn't seen, that even though CPW is supposedly a single agency now the state parks pass and SWAs wouldn't cover each other. I can only imagine what's going to come up when that becomes more widespread knowledge and enforced - it'd be like going to Rocky and having to pay two separate fees to visit the east and west sides of the park. Lory here has a bit of that going on being next to county.

Usually when I think SWA I think of some remote or isolated area that is primarily for wildlife and/or hunting. I knew about the map, actually went to it before posting, but short of clicking around on all of them to see if I recognized names or locations, there aren't many that come to mind. I know there probably are a lot that are used by more than just hunters and fishers, which is why I was wondering if people here knew of examples, or if there were any that would have specific impacts to wheeling.

i think you just pay some random person like $50 for a patch to put on your headliner and you’re “in”.

Moving to Charlotte, NC. Should be better with the 2 young kids and being closer to family. Hoping to move back to Colorado or Montana when they are a little older.

Question for everybody. If I was towing a enclosed trailer that maxed out the GX470’s tow rating(6500lbs) would I be better using cooper at3 XLT E load rating 285/75/17 tires or Cooper atw SL rating 265/70/17 tires. Concern with the bigger tires is the Lexus is already sluggish without towing anything. Concern with the smaller tires is they are SL rated and don’t want to have a blowout.

Also have the option of doing 2 trips with the Chevy 3500 but really don’t want to take 2 trips, it’s 2200 miles each way. Going to see how much the trailer weighs this weekend. Ideally the trailer will come in lighter than the max weight the Lexus can handle.

Here are the specs on the tires.

If you're going over GVWR and GAWR you'll likely want a heavier load rating than the standard load passenger tire. Diameter will not make much difference at those weights and could possibly help you as the gear will essentially be faster now. Don't even think of 5th, even in the downhill flats of Kansas.

Weight distributing hitch makes a huge difference, get one along with a brake controller and haul away. Plan on running around 55 to 60mph and you could likely stay in double digit fuel mileage.

Awesome, thanks! Didn’t even think about the weight distribution hitch that I used with the sequoia and camper. No need for it with the camper and 3500 truck.
Going to weigh the trailer today. Not looking forward to 55mph the whole way but it’s still better than 2 trips and the 8.1l truck will just sip gas at that speed.:rofl::rofl:

If your only concerned about towing I would go with a tire your going to be using more in the long run. I've done that trip 3 times in my truck on 285/75 and 255/70 with loaded down and a trailer. Millage will suffer yes but I think bigger so you can use em wheeling when out there

Gordon gulch today. ATV rider got a little heavy on the throttle, thankfully he was quick in bailing.
