someone tried to break our front door down !!!

holy shit!!

my wife and i were sitting in the living room watching tv when we heard these 2 very loud hits to our building. at first, we couldnt figure out where the noise came from, but quickly decided that it must have been the front door. we ran down stairs and saw all sorts of debris (paint, wood chips, etc...) on the floor and the door was pushed in. we called the property security and the police. the cop took a statement and filed a report. the security guy also took a statement for the management here. we also had one of the maintenance guys come out and reinforce the door for tonight. he used about 20, 3" wood screws on the door frame plus he added an additional piece of wood on the frame.

we figure it was probably just a bunch of kids F'ing around on halloween night, but it still scared the shit out of us.

as my wife said, maybe it time to get some defensive weapons for the house.

there were 2 shoe prints left on the door. one in the center of the pic and one near the bottom.


one more good kick and the door would have flown open.


the frame was split about 4 feet


i have never had to kick in a door, but i am suprised at how easy it really is.


the maintenance guy secured the door frame pretty well for tonight. he will fix it first thing in the morning.


that extra wood makes the frame really sturdy.... i wonder if we can make that a permanent addition?

 

i know that shoe print it is from a DC skate shoe i got the same pattern

 

You need a better deadbolt , most of the half decent ones have a 1/8 inch thick reinforcing plate behind the finished jamb piece , this is screwed to the framing with 3" # 10 screws . Your jamb should never split like that by kicking it .

They kicked facing away from the door. I don't think they were actually trying to break in, probably just f'in around.

 

I've seen a lot of door jams split exactly like that from being kicked.

True , with shitty deadbolts , if you look at the pics there is no reinforcing plate , so no screws into the framing , they are only holding the shitty finger-jointed jamb . You can see it is split along the screw lines top and bottom .

Just FYI...Some of the CQC training I have been through will tell you to "donkey" kick the door as a means to get it to open. Face away and kick back like a "donkey". Depends on who is doing it and what door you are up against, it works pretty good. I wouldn't discount it as just a prank based on the technique used IMO.

...and no it wasn't me...I am still in Afghanistan.

 

I know these don't look good, but If it was an attempt to break in it would help. Have you looked into a metal screen door? We have one on our front door. You need to pry it off before you can kick down the second door.

 

Leave the candy on the porch and nobody gets hurt.

Same here! That's the first thing I noticed.

 

Go buy a metal door that looks like a wood door. Imagine the SOB's surpise when he shatters his ankle kicking your door in. Plus, it's easier to see "who dun it" when he's still on the front step writing in agony.

And it'd be a funny "prank" to wave that shotgun/pistol/crossbow in his face after that.

 

You get more power out of a kick by "donkey kicking" rather than a front kick, see if your propety manager will change the direction of the doors opening (open outwards instead of in) that'll really mess them up.

 

Wow. Sorry to hear man. I hope it was just kids but yes, get some kinda reinforcement or atleast a handgun. What if you were out and the wife was by herself and they gave it one more kick? And were really trying to get in as opposed to just being a prank.?
Take a cwp course and atleast a level 1 handgun course.
My biggest fear in life prior to me getting a cwp was just as you described. Dying senslessly because of some stupid "random" act of violence.
