I didn't fix it yet. Not sure if it's the pulley or the belt..

Sounds like the belt. I'm going to replace it . It's around 40-50 for a gates one. The oem one off the truck doesn have a stamp or part number. Looks pretty cheap and flimsy

I just had a ticking sound today coming from my belt for about 5 minutes, it was pretty loud, looked like the belt had some lateral movement on the top driver side idler pulley. 40k miles on the truck. It stopped after I cycled the a/c and reved the engine some. If I hear it again it’s definetly gonna get some attention.

Try washing your engine bay or clean the serpentine belt. It might go away but I replaced mine with a gates belt . The old one only had 37k miles but was all flimsy and kinda strenched out so it would slip.

I just had a chirp/squeak coming from my engine. I could only reproduce it by driving at highway speeds for about 20 minutes and then returning to idling or sitting at stop lights. Then I would hear the squeak on acceleration. It would do it while in park. I was expecting it to be something more significant like the high pressure fuel pump or the idler tensioner. The dealer replaced my serpentine belt under warranty (odometer at 24k miles) and problem solved.

When I took off my OEM belt it doesn't have a stamp or part # or brand on it whatsoever the feel of quality is cheap. My gates belt is super quiet and the quality is nice vs the OEM. Been using gates for a while and quality is great. Made in Canada. Usually OEM belt made by bando or mitshibosi, but in this case they cheap out.

Will have to do the clean on it and see if the intermittent noise stops.I heard it tapping faintly again and it almost sounded like it was coming from the fan. If it happens again I will definetly try the gates belt

I drove on mine til it was hot and made the squeak. Drew the diagram of the belt since I didn't have my phone near to look up. Spin the 2 idler pulley to see if that was cause of squeak. Turn the engine on without the belt and see if it was fan or whatever is spinning. Quiet so I looked at the belt it was normal wear and tear. Compared it the new one and knew it was the belt. Slapped it on and let the engine run for about few minutes and test drove it for bit...so it's likely your belt. It's common problem for 3rd gen specially the 17 because of the manufacturer of that belt at the time. I usually go OEM but never had a problem with gates belts in the past and it was cheaper like 40 locally

I'm glad I'm not the only one experiencing this. I have ~ 40k miles on my 2017. I've taken it on a few off-road trips and noticed recently it's squeals like no other, especially after a good amount of driving. I took my air compressor and sprayed the belt and pulley's and it seems to have remedied the issue, temporarily. Hoping I don't need to start replacing parts, as 40k miles doesn't seem like too much, but we'll see.

I guess the serpentine belt has a short life and it's slipping or materials have rioted kinda like rubber in tires. Cheap compound great at first but crappy at the end don't last long. Usually the belt is good for 60-90k based on my experience with yotas. And it's just changing it out due to it's being old, but I'm sure it still has alot of life. Don't want the belt to rip when elsewhere and get stranded and folk out 150 for tow truck and wasted time.

Oh man. Same thing happened to me! I went off-roading. Hit some muddy puddles and then a few days later I get the squeal, the play in the top pulley. I sprayed water and the squeal went away. Only to come back the next few hours later. I still don’t see a tensioner if anyone can point me in that direction. In the mean time. Guess I’ll order a belt and some pulleys.

Belt squeak is usually caused by either the back side or inside of belt becoming shiny or worn in such a way that as it contacts the metal groves or backs of pulleys it squeaks. Much like a rubber shoe on a shiny floor. It was likely caused by going through water. Gates makes a long lasting belt that is well known to squeak right out of the box or within 50ish miles.

The pulley wobble is normal and is that way from the factory. There is nothing wrong with either the pulley or the bearing. Replace the belt and move on. Or buy belt dressing and keep driving.

I have the same problem after some.serious mud puddles. At 27k miles, sounds the belt should get replaced with a better quality one. I haven't wrenched much on a car in probably over a decade. Is swapping the belt relatively easy or is it more involved?

Curious if anyone has come across this sound that I caught between the 6 and 7 second mark.

    2019 Tacoma TRD OR M/T
    Miles: 27,553

    https://youtube.com/shorts/tkiMAgw4Fww

I need to take more video's and one where I'm actually recording from the front of the engine, but you can hear a weird rubbing/grinding sound when I kick on the AC.

This ONLY happens if the truck has been setting 3 or more days > I start the truck > then kick on the AC.
All 3 times it's happened to me it's only when I turned on the AC and never when the truck is just idling (also doesn't matter how long the truck has been running).
Sometimes it louder and sometimes it's quieter...

But worth sharing in case others have ran into that as well.

Since this thread is alive again…. Any tips on setting the tensioner? I’m at about 65k now so I figure it’s in the window of preventative maintenance.

Edit: I wonder if the answer’s in the vid that posted while I was writing.

Edit 2: ok, looks like the tensioner is pretensioned and you just need to put some pressure on it.
