I'm putting a coil on the rear this week, may as well throw one on up front right?

Yep, you're right. The Fathom 2 29er is the only one without a dropper post. Both Fathom 27.5 models and the Fathom 1 29er have it. Looks like they removed it on that one model.

Well damn, that's not bueno. What aspect of the bike do you think caused that to happen? Not slack enough?

Head angle does look pretty steep compared to a modern bike. But then again its a several year old short travel trail / downcountry bike.

Odd. They also do a 100mm fork on the 29er instead of the 120 on the 27.5.

I honestly haven’t ridden the 29er version, so I can’t tell you my preference haha. Found the 27.5 at too good of a deal to pass up

    enough to have fun
had an alloy one for a little. It’s a rocket and way more of an XC bike than what I like, but a rocket nonetheless

yeah, his summary probably confirms my biggest concern - the slightly older design/geo with the short travel. Everything else I've tested (and enjoyed) is of the newer long/low variety.

Transition Scout pre-update was a fun ST bike. If you could find one of those, I think you'd enjoy it.

I have not been on a coil fork since probably 05-06 so I was pumped to see then start coming back with upgrade kits. They used to ride super great until air springs became the 100% norm.

Fun fact: The OE Fox Rhythm 36 fork is slightly different from the other Fox 36 forks. The fork is essentially the same as a Marzocchi Bomber Z1, so the Z1 coil upgrade fits that model. Plus it has my preferred GRIP damper (same as Z1). So I was able to find an OE Rhythm fork with the specs I needed plus the coil upgrade kit to end up with a budget Fox 36 coil that I posted a few pages back.

The sad truth is that I probably need to wait until all this lockdown nonsense is finished so that I can properly demo the options again. There are soooo many ST "Trail" 29ers out there now to choose from these days.

I've been taking my time so far with finding a 29er replacement for my Mojo3, so no need to rush it now.
I've heard that about the RKT, as well. I need my full squish to run double duty as XC and Trail, so I'll probably keep looking.

    Good info all, thanks guys.

I love to hear stuff like this! I’m going cheaper on my next bike but I’m not willing to give up suspension performance.

I’m in the same boat, there are so many options....which is why I decided to go with a new gravel bike now and wait until later this year for a new trail bike haha

I recently got a Revolt Advanced 3. So far, so good, but I haven't gotten out on it as much as I would want to. The shop where I got it sells Salsa as well and I was originally looking at the Journeyman. The shop owner steered us towards the Revolt. I think that they mostly sell the flat bar Journeyman, and don't really stock the drop bar version. The shop owner rides a Revolt himself and said he rides everything from singletrack to triathlons on it.

Yeah I think it was 71.5 degree HTA? Don't quote me, but it's definitely a cross country bike and and older geo at that. Not my style of riding either, I didn't really think it climbed that great either. I immediately PR'ed almost every section of every trail after getting the SB130, even though it is a bigger, heavier bike. YMMV though, I'm not a CX guy.

Based on seeing you ride one weekend last year and you living in Raleigh, I think you'd have a ball on a modern geo, short travel 29'er. Something 100-120 in the rear, Fox 34 or equivalent up front. SB100, Hei Hei, Tall Boy.

The YT Izzo could be one to add in there. Looks pretty racy.

Nice! Thats the thing for me, I dont wanna spend that much on a secondary bike. I was also looking at the Giant Contend AR 2. More roady, but It can fit up to a 38mm tire which is plenty clearance for a gravel tire to be put on. One of my local shops is trying to steer me towards that but i want nothing to do with a metallic blue bike lol.

I love that greeeen on the Journeyman. But i think the Revolt is a better value --- Plus the dark grey on the Revolt 2 would match my Taco.
